Comments Thread For: Vargas: Goal Is To Become Champ Again, Beating Mikey Will Get Me There

With just seven fights to his name over the past five years, Jessie Vargas' patience has truly been put to the test. A good thing finally accompanied his wait, as the former two-time titlist prepares for a welterweight showdown versus Mikey Garcia. Their bout takes place February 29 at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, marking Vargas' third fight with sports streaming service DAZN while California's Garcia (39-1, 30KOs) makes his debut on the platform.

I don’t think this is the ideal time for this fight, with that said it’ll be a little more interesting bc of their weight hopping of late.
Personally I thought Vargas looked good against Broner. Mike McCollum had him busting the body, which the judges didn’t quite score correctly imo, which should be a good thing against Mikey for the first few rounds then switch to a more upstairs game once a Mikey starts to get his timing.
Vargas looks a touch faster than Mikey w/ his hands

I like Jesse. He's a good fighter with lots of heart. It's just that, no shame, but he's a level or more below the top guys.
Watch the Soto fight. Soto is faded now but he was a top guy in his prime. Vargas' youth and size were too much for Soto, but you could still see flashes of the top guy Humberto was and how (in my opinion) he still out shined Vargas skill wise.

''Mikey is the WW gatekeeper. To be great, you have to go through him. Spence almost learned this the hard way.''
