We all know the old sayings
“A good big man beats a good little man.”
“They have weight classes for a reason.”
Etc., etc.
Promoters know this too and they’ve now figured out how to turn it around on fight fans and trick them into thinking fights that won’t be competitive will be.
When Mikey Garcia moved up to fight Lipinets and Broner, everyone questioned if Garcia could deal with their size. Yes because he’s in a different class. Garcia knew this, fight fans didn’t.
When Canelo Alvarez fought Chavez Jr., Fielding and Kovalev, he was either in a different class or in his prime while the other fighter was old and shot. Questions flew about whether or not he could deal with the size difference. Of course he could, a few pounds isn’t going to make up for difference in class or age.
Lomachenko-Lopez is the latest example. Lopez is so much bigger (he isn’t actually but that’s the story), he hits so much harder (he doesn’t actually but that’s the story). Can Lomachenko deal with it?
Yes. He’s a top 3 p4p fighter fighting a decent young champion. It’s going to be a wipe out.
The new saying to follow in this generation of boxing is “the A-side will always win unless something goes terribly wrong.” No one is challenging themselves, they’re pretending to so boxing fans think they’re great without taking much risk.
It’s the new era of boxing. I guess we have to deal with it.
