It's not just that he lost, he wasnt getting fights and when he did they were on opening bouts or non televised parts of cards. Can't stress it enough he was part of that deep 2016 class that all turned pro fighters from the 2016 Olympics and fighters like Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, Vergil Ortiz that were you too young to be allowed to fight in the 2016 Olympics and turned pro early rather then stay amateur for 4 more years for next Olympic cylce. All these guys signed and turned pro and Balderas was as or more accomplished then Shakur, Ryan Garcia, Teofimo, Vergil Ortiz, Devin Haney, etc. There was a bidding war he had a big name, KO power he beat Teofimo to take the Olympic spot away from him but he got fooled by that snake oil salesmen Schaefer and signed to his brand new promotional company rather then Top Rank, Golden Boy etc.

Balderas had only 9 pro fights in 3 years since he signed. Top blue Chip prospects should be fighting 5-6 times a year minimum when they turn pro until they start fighting for regional or world titles. Ryan Garcia for example fought 7 times his first 12 months under Golden Boy all his fights were televised. Balderas was knocking guys out mostly in 1 round no need for layoffs but was extremely inactive for a top prospect because his promotional company sucks and didn't have TV network dates. Schaefer company formed end of 2016 but only 11 cards he's promoted. 1 end of 2016, 6 in 2017, 3 in 2018 and only 1 in 2019. He's going the wrong direction because Haymon don't use him any more as the main promoter. And because he's not the main promoter of his own shows that's why Balderas had long droughts fighting and when he does it's non televised fights because the main promoter is putting their own fighters on showcase of these cards. Last night Balderas wasn't even supposed to be on the TV card but fights were canceled and he was bumped up ironically he finally gets a TV card and gets knocked out.

A prospect is just that. A prospect. It guarantees NOTHING.

You still have to fight and win in the ring.

But lets find a convenient excuse for a fighters shortcomings in the ring.
Not just that he lost but he wasn't getting exposure. People forget Ryan Garcia had no Instagram/social media following before he signed with Golden Boy, he got that after he signed and given the exposure and platform to shine. Balderas was a bigger name and star then Garcia when they signed was seen as bigger then Teofimo because he beat him and got all that Olympics exposure. Now all those fighters from 2016 class are either already world champs or on the door step, all have headlined and are draws while Balderas who was once seen as better or more more accomplished amateur but was knocking everyone out in pro's but was light-years away from a title shot not developing because he wasn't fighting enough and fighting in obscurity for a failing promotional company.

I only just got the chance to watch most the undercard a couple days ago.* Going through this thread I was kind of surprised to see that no one mentioned the humorous irony in Lennox Lewis, on account of his doing PBC commentary work, watching a sort of twisted "replay" of his being knocked out by Oliver McCall unfolding a few feet in front of him. Then, just to top it off beautifully, Balderas, who was sooo toasted, overdone, and to my eyes he appeared to be much more toasted than Lewis (I know looks don't exactly always mean that, but that's pretty much what the ref has to go on) and this referee lets the fight continue! I thought Lennis was gonna bring it up and go ape. Maybe even Hulk out and smash that ref. Anyway, that is all. Apologies for resurrecting an old thread
