AJ got knocked out by Ruiz, and the judges saved Wilder from an L against Fury. If either Wilder or AJ lose now, the fight may never materialize. There's no guarantee that they'll avoid losing long enough to reach one another, which is a reason for why you shouldn't marinate matches. If AJ takes on Usyk instead of dropping the WBO strap, then the match is really in jeopardy. AJ doesn't fight as well against smaller men, and Usyk's arguably more skilled than Fury.
If AJ chooses between the WBO and IBF, and wins his next fight, he'll be able to face the winner of Wilder vs Fury II later next year.
