Comments Thread For: Vergil Ortiz Makes Welterweight Limit On Second Try

Vergil Ortiz was one of three fighters requiring two tries to make weight, and the last boxer to the scale in order to hit the mark. The leading candidate for 2019 Prospect of the Year was able to get it right the second time around, coming in at 147 pounds an hour after the official weigh-in to preserve Friday's main event versus Brad Solomon. Ortiz Jr. (14-0, 14KOs) initially weighed 148 pounds but was able to shed the excess weight to move forward with his fourth fight of the year, which airs live on DAZN from Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

Meh, it was just a pound anyway not the end of the world. Most of those scales are way off to begin with.

3 fighter were off by ounces and they all came back within 15 minutes to make weight. Either big coincidence or the scale was off.

Sounds like the scale may have been a bit off but truth be told the WW limit is 147 so ideally you want to come in a bit under that like 146-146.5 not right at the 147 limit or stuff like this could happen..

Ortiz isn't that big of a dude either he really shouldn't have any problems makin 147 I can't see him being a factor at 154..

I bet it takes about $20 to have someone calibrate the scale every time before a weigh in. But in an effort to save money they probably don't do it.
