Ruiz CLEARLY was not prepared for the fight. Say what you will about styles, he was not in physical shape. Mental, sure. Physical, no. And someone told him to BS his way through it.
But how's that any different from -
Lemieux getting outclassed by Saunders - then excuse?
Manny getting outclassed by Floyd - then excuse (and a form filled out with invalid information)?
Stiverne getting outclassed by Wilder the first time - then excuse about being dehydrated (I think he was vitamin deficient, but still)
Eubank Jr. getting outclassed by Groves - then excuses (to the point his own dad had to tell him the facts)
Wilder getting taken to a draw by Fury - then more excuses than I've ever seen
That's why I keep telling people, Boxing is a BUSINESS. These guys are told to go out there and sell the MF'n fight and get asses in the seats no matter what is going on with them. So you can't get mad when it turns out your guy (not YOU, just saying) gets smoked (or heavily tested) and makes excuses after the fight. In an age where steroids are not welcome, that's going to keep happening.
