When Anthony Joshua decided to go for an instant rematch with Andy Ruiz, the comparison everyone reached to in order to justify the decision was Lennox Lewis. It was a shock every bit as big as Ruiz's win over Joshua when Lewis was flattened by Hasim Rahman in South Africa in 2001. Revenge, though, was swift and conclusive as Lewis left the American flat on his back in the fourth round in Las Vegas seven months later.

History usually favours the victor in the 1st fight but I'm still backing AJ

Lewis got beat by Rahman and McCall, dominated them both in rematches. Wlad lost to brewster stopped him in the rematch

Boxing Scene runs an article saying this is a unique fight and then this article comparing the loss to previous fights. Was there any point?

I do think that the first Ruiz punch, due to a strange set of circumstances caused major concussion to Joshua - doctor's analysis, Joshua not knowing what was happening in the corner - so he wasn't able to fight and defend himself properly the rest of the fight.

But no denying that Ruiz has faster combos and a quick counterpunch.

Mind says Ruiz, heart says AJ

          Rushed readying the article.
But Joe Louis lost to the german and then beat him in rematch. Wlad lost to Lamon Brewster and won rematch. BUt im not sure Wlad had immediate rematch as with Joe Louis?
Josh might have been wise to go on a 5 year unbeaten run before rematching Ruiz

            Neither was an immediate rematch

I’d like to see the statistics on rematches when the loser got dominated, outclassed and beat up over multiple rounds, rather than just knocked out with a shot.

good point. Ruiz’s win wasn’t a fluke shot like Rahmans

Indeed. Well i wouldn’t say fluke because it was thrown with intent, but almost anyone can get caught and knocked out in boxing. Aside from that, there was no reason to suggest Rahman was better than Lewis in general.

Going by the first fight, Ruiz just looked like a better fighter than Joshua. So as i say, i’d love to know the statistics on that kind of loss and the rematches. I’d imagine they heavily favour the winner of the first fight.

                    At heavyweight we have?

                    Muhammad Ali beating Joe Frazier.

Lennox Lewis destroying both Hasim Rahnman and Oliver Mccall.

                    Evander Holyfield beating Rid**** Bowe.

Wladimir Kiltschko pretty much ending Lamon Brewster career 'Kiltschko probably would of beaten Tyson Fury in their rematch also'
