There were so many storylines attached to Rene Alvarado seeking to win his first title-though surprisingly none particularly fueled by revenge. The resurgent junior lightweight from Nicaragua claimed a belt in emphatic style, dominating Andrew Cancio (21-5-2, 16KOs) over seven rounds in forcing a stoppage in their rematch Saturday evening at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.
