Canelo is Transitioning to Defensive Counterman? Will He Stay Like This?

I was just thinking... I don’t recall when another boxer just relied on effective counter punching like the Kovalev fight, took everything away from the Krusher. Funny how they say Canelo vs Kovalev was boring. Remember whom we used to attribute that to?!

What if Canelo turns into Floyd, becomes more defensive magician than proto-offensive?

Very interesting time we are in. Super Sayan mode coming

I think he adjusts as needed per opponent. I think he is naturally a counter puncher, but GGG 2 proved he can come forward and bring the fight if that's what it takes. For Kovalev i think he knew that he could leave him self open so he seal up and showed really great defense. Eddy and Canelo's game plan were perfect once again.

The fight was extremely boring because Kovalev did not come to fight. The only excitement in the entire 11 rounds was the KO ending. I doubt anybody wanted to watch that fight twice. Any of the top middleweights would have beat the Kovalev that showed up in my opinion If you want to talk about a great Canelo performance then pick another fight because he could have won that fight in his sleep.

doesnt he always fight that way? its why he did so poorly against floyd. he tried to counter the counter puncher and yeah didn't work. just kept waiting and waiting. im sure he was near death from being drained as well but still.

Sure he can stay like this, as long as judges have him up 6 rounds in every fight.

In a way you’re right, though Nelo’s reach has gotten better imo. However I’d have to see tape against Kovalev. I could be totally wrong since Kova has no torso flexibility or reflexes like Floyd, but you got a good eye with various stances Nelo had compared to the Kovalev fight. I still agree with Moretti’s 4 rounds. It’s not so much that Canelo tried to play chess and lose to the chessmaster, but Nelo did have good rounds when he pressed on basic offense.

So Canelo fought Kovalev the way he fought Floyd? I don’t think so.., but I saw various traits.

He has always been a defensive counter puncher
