I tell people all the time, boxing isn't even a top 5 sport in America anymore.

the PPV model, ducking, corruption, and frivolous belts have killed it to an extent.

Like, I'd say football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, NASCAR, and maybe even UFC & WWE (which isn't even a sport) has passed it in popularity.

I'm probably the only hardcore boxing fan I know.

Everybody else is like, "It aint been good since Tyson & Sugar Ray was fighting" or only watched Floyd Mayweather fights.

Thank Don King & Bob Arum for this bullshxt.

I don't believe that, most casuals are totally unaware of 3/4 of those negatives

how many athletes participate in american football every year ?

I know nothing about that sport... but lets guess

likely, 20 teams... likely, 20 players per team... thats 400 right there

        conservative I think

lets add in 2 more sports... basketball and baseball...

maths + maths + yada yada yada = 400 each, 1200 players in total

again, conservative... pretty sure there are more than 1200 professional footballers baseballers and basketballers in the USA

just for kicks, lets add it tennis and golf... say, 200 each

200 each could be a little high for tennis/golf... but I think we probably ended up in the right place... pretty sure those football basketball baseball numbers are conservative

so, of those 1600 professional athletes... how many of them earn what could be accurately described as... "good" money?

I will tell you how many... 100%

now tell me how many boxers earn... " good "... money

        right... 2%

2%... in a MUCH harder sport... IF you are good enough

and if you are NOT good enough, then hard luck... you got KTFO for NOTHING in front of your family and friends

I am not suggesting that is the WHOLE reason... but look at the UK, boxing is flourishing under the same model you criticized... look at Mexico, flourishing under the same model...

not saying your comments were wrong, you are 100% correct imho... I just doubt that those negatives are the sole cause of boxing woes in the USA

in the USA, there are FAR better/easier ways for an athlete to earn a living than boxing bro...

I'd say HW is securely in their hands as they hold all the titles.

          Ruiz is mexican american
          Wilder is African american

Joshua just wishes he was american

It’s become less popular over the years

I also think it’s a hard sport for people to get interested in now. Even my casual fan friends get lost when I’m trying to explain that there’s sometimes 4 world champs in a division, explaining why certain fighters don’t usually fight each other because of different promoters and networks etc ..

I think these are big reasons why the armchair sports fan doing really get totally into boxing, the sport is a mess really.

It's reflective of societal changes in America. Boxing is seen as barbaric and overly violent by many. This change in attitude is reflected in other sports as well. Look at football, and the recent rule changes regarding hits to the QB, helmet to helmet contact, unnecessary roughness, etc. And look at basketball with the frequency of fouls for what would have been tolerated in the past. More and more, Americans are turning away from combat sports

Ten years ago, UFC 100 did 1.3M units. In the decade since, the only name to produce higher figures is Conor McGregor. Further, in the decade following UFC 100, there have only been 3 events which sold more than 1M buys that did not include the names McGregor, Rousey, or Lesnar.
