Comments Thread For: Sergey Kovalev - One More Time at Bat

By Cliff Rold - Almost. The word hangs over the career of Russia's WBO light heavyweight titlist Sergey Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KO). The 36-year old almost beat Andre Ward in 2016. He almost cemented an argument as the best light heavyweight since at least Roy Jones if not Michael Spinks. He almost made a case as the number one fighter in the sport, regardless...

Kovalev is now too old and broken and will likely lose to drug cheat Canelo. Of course it Will be via a dodgy decision as usual.

Either that, or the ref waves it off the first time Canelo causes Kovalev to wince with a body shot.

Kovalev has to knock out Gingernuts cold, and he still might not win the fight because of the ref and judges.

Saying Kovalev "almost" Beat ward in their 1st fight pretty much either exposes disproportionate bias towards Ward or simply lack of boxing knowledge on behalf of the author...

The official result of the 2nd fight was a travesty too. Yes, Ward started much better than in the 1st, but we won't really know how it would've unfolded.

Ward's ball-whipping frenzy of Kovalev's testicles, combined with referees almost telepathic synchronicity with Ward's actions inside the ring, smell of a stitch up job.

Kovalev is a multiple-time world champion with numerous big names on his record even if he was jobbed by US judges in one bout.

That's no "almost" and the word absolutely doesn't hang over his career - crappy basis for the article.

Agree that Kovalev beat Ward the first fight. Almost as shocking a result as Canelo vs GGG 1, but nothing will top that stitch up.

The writer sounding like Donald Trump making up his own "truth" on championship belts. Bad read.

Krusher has a better than good, not quite great career. Lucky for him, it is not over yet. But what he has to do to get to the great category are all tall orders:

-Beat Alvarez, something I think is a real possibility but he has to start strong and beat him convincingly. Alvarez will get most of the close rounds and Kovalev cannot afford to start slow and give those away. But I think it is shaping up nicely for him to pull the "upset" which will really only be an upset in Vegas and in casual boxing writers and fans eyes.

-Unify the 175 division. Does anyone really think Kovalev can do this against all the young guns? I think he has no chance.

So, beat Alvarez and maybe put up another defense or two before trying to win against Beterbiev or Bivol. This is the best scenario for the back end of his career in my humble, unimportant opinion.
