Tony Weeks was included in the Nevada State Athletic Commission's pool of potential officials, but Weeks wasn't chosen Wednesday as the referee for the Canelo Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev fight. The NSAC went with executive director Bob Bennett's recommendation and approved Russell Mora as the referee for their 12-round fight for Kovalev's WBO light heavyweight title November 2 in Las Vegas. The last time Weeks worked a Kovalev fight, his eighth-round stoppage of Kovalev's rematch against Andre Ward caused controversy because Ward landed three consecutive, questionable body blows just before Weeks halted the action.

Byrd did an ok job reffing Kovalev-Ward 1. Now Weeks on the other hand was a joke. Glad he was not picked.

Not too concerned about the referee. Neither fighter, so far as I can remember, has ever been prone to illegal tactics. The judges will do what judges do in these sort of fights so we will, as always, need to rely on what we see more than what the judges say they saw.

I think if Canelo can go 12 he'll win on the cards and I doubt that concerns Kovalev much so long as that check don't bounce.

Somewhere along the line, Jay Nady stopped doing major fights, when we all know he's the Best Referee and has been for decades. I figure he kinda started to know he was the best and got a little " high and mighty" behind the scenes,a little mouthy, and Bennett or whoever didn't take kindly to it.
