Comments Thread For: Arum: Beterbiev-Bivol is Very Possible in 2020 - After IBF Mandatory

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes IBF, WBC light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs), says a unification with WBA champion Dmitry Bivol is very possible for 2020. Last Friday night in Philadelphia, Beterbiev broke down and stopped undefeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk to unify the WBC, IBF titles.

We dont hear much from Jesse Hart, Eleider Alvarez and Gilberto Ramirez, what did they think about Gvozdyk-Beterbiev, whats their post fight reaction, what do they think about fighting Beterbiev or at least Gvozdyk? Will they just wait on the side till the champs finish unifying?

Would be another good one. Also, Kovalev beating Canelo would be best for this division. Kovalev would be more likely to fight Beterbiev and Bivol while Canelo would be more likely to move back down, sit on the belt, and take away the opportunity for an undisputed champion.

Except for the huge weight disparity, Canelo matches up well against any of them.

Kovalev has his work cut for him.

Hart and Ramirez have been the most quiet , almost mouse like
This would be a moment to speak up but instead nothing
Wondering if they didn’t like what they saw from Beterbiev or maybe just holding out and try to get the cash cow or cash out guy
Eleider will not fight Beterbiev anytime soon
First of all they were stablemates for a long time and also because they have the same trainer

Same. Hopefully it happens first half of 2020. Beterbiev's career badly needs momentum, especially at his age. You can't expect the first big fight to automatically be that big because there's no context to it. You have to do lots of top fights, mixing and matching everyone, so fans can learn who everyone is, how good everyone really is, what their strengths and weaknesses are, how they did against comparable opponents, and that's when fans will have enough info to understand how good they guys are that they're watching, and to understand what the stakes are.

Beterbiev vs Gvozdyk was probably 1 vs 2, but because there was so little context, it's impossible to know 100%. And since it's impossible to know for a fact that it was 1 vs 2, that lowered the stakes. What if Gvozdyk is just overrated? What if Bivol is way better? What if Alvarez on his best night is actually better than all of them?

I dont believe that, but Im just saying, until they start making lots of top level fights at 175, there's not enough context to know for sure, and that lowers the stakes, as opposed to "Gvozdyk has clearly proven he's #1, Beterbiev has clearly proven he's #2, they're the two last guys standing, and this is for all the marbles." That creates much more excitement, when you know that, instead of having to assume.

Agreed, would be best all around if Kovalev annihilates Canelo, so we can get some good fights in the LHW division. Kovalev vs Bivol, then the winner fights Beterbiev for all the belts....we can only hope.
