Capitalism taken to its extreme kills everything it touches. How can boxing not fail when the next generation of possible fighters can't ever afford to witness a live boxing match (or a live TV broadcast) when it is priced way beyond their means to do so?
As a kid, I used to watch great fights for free on terrestrial television.
I watched "Marvelous" Marvin and "Sugar Ray" fight, I followed the carriers of Thomas Hearnes, Mike Tyson, Barry McGuigan, Bruno, Lewis, Benn, Eubank etc. on free to air terrestrial TV so no wonder I fell in love with the sport, we had no money to spare to pay to watch anything, it was all free to watch.
Then Along came Don King....... and now a UK fight costs £20 to watch a live broadcast and $100 in the US, and you seldom see an national title fight on free TV.
What chance has a young kid got to get hooked on this great sport and lace up gloves down the local gym when he never experiences that thrill?
Thanks America, Home of the pay wall, and land of the PPV.
Whooa Money!
