Patrick Day The Fighting Pride Of Freeport New York

As many who follow this site know, Patrick Day has succumb to his injuries from his last fight and passed away. I did not know Patrick Day during my time of fighting. He may have been a junior that I did not get a chance to meet. But I know Freeport Boxing Club very well. I know Coach Joe Higgins. I remember getting up on saturday mornings and traveling to the Freeport gym for sparring. I remember it being a place I took an uppercut that hit me so hard I thought I got hit in the back of the head. I woke up in seconds. I took one round off, and got back in the ring. That place could make you a tougher fighter, a better fighter. I remember when Joe Higgins was voted as LBC of New York Metro amateur boxing. We were happy and proud. Coach Joe was a real genuine and down to earth person. I told you what he felt he needed to tell you and if he didnt feel like he needed to say anything, he did not waste his time. This is why I am offering my condolences to Patrick Day and his family, as well as Coach Joe Higgins and his family. The time it takes with training any fighter, to push them to their potential, to see them go through ups, and to see them go through their shortcomings affects any trainer that truly cares. Coach Higgins can emphatically let anyone know how he felt about Patrick Day. Just by reading his responses to Charles Conwell on Twitter, you know that Patrick Day had a place in his heart and his heart has been broken from the outcome of the fight. The amount of remorse from Patrick Day's opponent Charels Conwell has been enormous. I do not know if Charles Conwell the fighter will ever be the same. But I hope he finds healing as time goes by. Patrick Day represented Long Island, New York well during his time as a fighter. Every fighters story is going to be different. This is where Patrick's story must end in his physical form. I am filled with sorrow when any fighter dies or is injured beyond what their normal quality life has been. I know what training long periods of time feels like. I know what the mental preparation to fight feels like. I know what that numb feeling is like when you step in the ring and you know their are only two ways you leave the ring, walking or on a stretcher. The passing of Patrick Day may seem like it's only affected by the people that directly knew him but it ripples through time and space. It brings back memories and recollections of not only him but the other people that are affected, and creates instant sorrow with the hope that his passage is safe and his rest is peaceful. Patrick Day will forever be the fighting pride of Freeport, New York.
