It was already explained by another poster...the money was less and he would have had yarde to pay step aside. He went life and death with yarde...the offer got increased and that retirement package was looking pretty damn good...good enough to take the fight on short notice in a place he didn’t want it. Canelo’s people were desperate...best believe kovalev got an extra couple mil on top lol.

Kovalev wasn't about to cancel the fight in Russia. Tickets were already on sale in his hometown. He'd have to pay Yarde a fighter that doesn't even spar step aside. Apparently he would have to also compensate Russian broadcasters. He would be taking a big fianancial hit and end up fighting Canelo for a lot less. He wasn't about to burn his hometown fans and take a huge cut in his net to duck a fighter I'm sure he felt confident of beating.
