What usually happens when two mandatory obligations are due at the same time?

Hearn keeps saying the WBO mandatory will be due after the winner of Ruiz vs. AJ. I thought the IBF was next in rotation that's why they had to get an exemption and agree to fight Pulev next?

But since he's claiming both are due next let's talk about that. When was the last time this happened and what happened?

Last time it happened when both were due at the same time was back in the 90's. I'm sure it'll come to me. Might have been Lennox?

but basically the fighter chooses which mandatory they fight, and the other belt gets vacated.

I thought there was an agreed upon order when a champion is unified. I can’t see either org stripping a guy for facing another mandatory. Maybe they’ll get an extension for one and do 2 mandatory fights in a row...which would be ok I suppose, it’s not like pulev or usyk are trash opponents.

Pulev is incredibly past his expiry date.

That's what I thought. They needed an exemption for the IBF because it was next. So if the sanctioning bodies agreed the IBF was next where is this WBO mandatory coming from? And they can't get another extension from the IBF. This fight is their extension

To be fair, he deserves it over usyk...he’s earned his stripes in the division and has been in line. If the belt changes hands again, doesn’t Joshua have 12 months under the wbo rules?

If there was a scenario of 2 mandatories back to back, pulev first then usyk would probably be better for all parties anyway. It gives usyk a chance to fight a live body and show he belongs and would also help build the fight. I think it’s more of an issue if Ruiz wins, because his time frame for defending the belt will be from the time he won it, where Joshua will have another 9-12 months.

Not sure why you think that. AJ fought Takam as his IBF Mandatory, then unification with Parker, then WBA mandatory in Povetkin and then voluntary with Ruiz. So WBO next, then IBF.

Because they had to get an exception for the IBF. You don't remember that?

The Golovkin / Derevyanchenko / Canelo situation springs to mind. The WBC were in rotation for GGG and made Canelo mandatory after the first fight. After Canelo popped and withdrew from the rematch the IBF jumped in although technically it should still have been the WBCs turn in rotation - the WBC should, in fact, probably have immediately ordered GGG vs Jermall, and the IBF waited their turn. Ironically if Golovkin had fought Derevyanchenko instead of fighting Canelo later in the year he could potentially have been stripped by the WBC for not honouring his mandatory commitment to them, although given the circumstances it's hard to imagine them taking that step.
