  • Comments Thread For: Julian Williams Title Defense Planned For Jan. 18 In Philadelphia

A lot has changed in the eight years since Julian J-Rock' Williams has enjoyed a hometown fight. The biggest chance is his current status as the reigning unified junior middleweight champion, an honor which he will enjoy for his long overdue homecoming. BoxingScene.com has learned that plans are in store for Williams (27-1-1, 16KOs) to make the first defense of his unified 154-pound crown on Jan. 18 at the Liacouras Center on Temple University grounds in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Neither an opponent nor platform has been solidified for the occasion, other than ruling out a previously targeted rematch with Jarrett Swift' Hurd.

Sucks that Hurd pulled out of the rematch and put JRock in this position. If he's fighting in Philly, then he's not fighting someone like Lara. Word was that all four LMWs signed a deal where the winners of the December rematches would face off in June of 2020 for a three belts showdown.

Charlo-Harrison rematch must have moved to Dec 14?
Makes sence with Jermall fighting Dec 7.

Rock fights winner of Castano/Omotoso or Terrell Gausha.

Cancelled rematch was a major disappointed but I dont blame Hurd and his management. His handlers invested in him and need to milk him for as long they can. Jumping right back in there isnt wise because of the way he lost. He didnt just lose a close fight but he got thoroughly outboxed and outfought in every aspect.

Unless his team are cashing out on Hurd, they wouldnt let him fight Williams again so soon.

I mean if Hurd just wants one fight with a new trainer before the rematch that is fine. Or even if he just wants to move up to MW now that is fine. But it put JRock in this predicament and now will have only fought once in 2019. But since he is fighting in January, guess he can get three fights next year.

They may cross paths at some point but Hurd blew it. Williams shocked me with that win.

Lara free. Thats a good fight for Jrock to throw a name on his resume. And Lara aint the Lara from a few years ago so a more winnable fight.

Still possibly my favorite performance this year. Wanted the rematch but I can understand Hurd's side. Really want JRock to get other fights.
