  • Thoughts on Spence/Porter

I have always been high on Spence, and was expecting a dominant performance from him, with probably a late stoppage...in hindsight Porter may have been a tough matchup for him, and did 'expose' some flaws Spence has.

I always thought that Spence's only real holes at WW were that he can be a bit slow (foot and hand speed) for a WW...and can look a bit lumbering and flat footed.

Spence being unable to keep Porter at bay was surprising to me though...I thought Spence's jab was better than that...but Porter kept good distance, and Spence couldn't keep Shawn at bay...and that let Shawn turn it into a dog fight and a tough fight.

Spence did some great work to the body throughout the fight...and to get to the body, you have to get inside...and in doing so you will probably take a lot of punishment...Spence should have kept this one at distance imo...I can see Crawford getting in and out against Spence after this performance...Crawford may just be too quick for him.

But I don't know if TC can take those shots that Shawn took, especially to the body...after seeing this fight though I think Crawford wins some clear rounds vs Spence by getting in and out...and unless Spence stops/KOs him, I think it will be tough for him to pile up clear rounds vs TC to get a clear W...usually when you live on the inside, you take some damage to get in there, and end up getting as good as you give.

1 - Porter, pretty clear imo...more activity and more scoring punches
2 - Spence, pretty clear imo...more activity and scoring...timing Porter better when Porter tries to come in
3 - Spence, probably clearest round so far...more work and cleaner work

4 - Porter, clear...not everything he threw landed, and not everything that landed, landed clean...but great round from him...a lot of good/damaging shots
5 - Spence...a little more work and a little cleaner work
6 - Spence, clear...some good body work and just more and cleaner work than Porter in this round.

7 - Porter...clear...both guys maybe a little tired...this round was all Porter, then all Spence...then all Porter at the end to take it.
8 - Spence...took it early, then held on late
9 - Porter...man close round...Shawn had it then Errol came back...think Shawn just held on at the end

10 - Porter...had it for Spence, then I think Porter may have hurt him with something...a few of those shots Shawn landed seemed to have an impact on Spence in the last 1:30 of the round.
11 - Spence...wouldn't exactly call it a flash KD, but Porter wasn't too affected by it, and got up fighting the same way as before the KD, no sign of his legs really being affected by it...but still a 10-8 round.
12 - Another 12th round that is very hard for me to score...I thought Spence did a bit more work, but Porter's shots were maybe a little more damaging it seemed (head popping back etc). I will shade it to Shawn.

So 6-6 imo but I feel the better man won...could see 7-5 for Spence...maybe 8-4...hard to see Shawn getting 7 rounds imo.

      Crawford hasn't fought a top5 welterweight.

So analyzing what he coulda, woulda, shoulda done doesn't make sense.

Like I always say, nothing special about Spence. Yes last night was a terrific fight but it showed us all what most of us had seen against brook and bundu....spence just isn't that good a technical boxer and doesn't hit as hard as ppl want to make out.

Porter was unlucky to be kd otherwise it could have been a draw.

Spence us lucky Crawford isn't in his stable.

Yeah with TC it is about what he has done at previous weights...and then also the eye test...but obviously Spence-TC is the big fight at 147, so analyzing what would happen when they fight is going to be a topic.

Relative to expectations, Crawford has exceeded almost every time I have watched him...Spence has as well, except for his last 2 fights...I always favored Spence in that fight but now I go from 50-50 to 60-40 TC...just a question of can TC deal with Spence's power.

I like Spence...but the inability to keep this fight on the outside is worrying...I thought his jab was better than that...he is still a top fighter imo, great body work every fight, and good skills/heart/chin/IQ...just thought he had a bit more power and a little better jab.

Spence is a top fighter and so are Porter and Crawford....but that is more telling of the modern welterweight division than anything else.

I think even the version of Pac that turned up against Thurman could beat Porter and Spence from last night. It shows a complete lack of progression in the division from the peaks it reached in the 90s and 00s.

For my money, TC is the best of the lot and can outbox you or beat you up, sadly the American boxing system is so broken now that he may never end up fighting Spence.

Nice breakdown , I especially agree mostly with the score card* and the thoughts on TC. * The knockdown was seemingly flash but watch it on slow mo from the other angles, Porter went OUT for a moment. It was a peach that would have ended a lot of other fights and Porter really elevated in my opinion from how he handled it and the rest of the round. When I saw just how glazed his eyes were in the replays it really impressed me how he fought on as like you say he seemed unaffected. It's especially good to see from someone who was high on Spence as most people are shut down as haters or TC fanboys which is why I haven't bothered. Really wish Brooke hadn't fought GGG. Really good division at the moment if people would/could all just fight each other.

Manny at 40 doing what he did vs Thurman was pretty incredible..didn't watch that whole fight but most seem to feel he deserved the W...I will say that Porter's style is all wrong for Manny imo.

I used to think Spence would be way too big for Manny...interestingly though I am not so sure about that now...I don't know if Spence could completely physically dominate Manny...and Manny imo could land on Spence and get in and out with his speed...it may actually be a great fight.

Thanks man I really appreciate that...good points from you as well...will have to look at that KD again....yeah I would have loved to have seen a fresh Brook vs Spence...think it would have been an even better version of the fight we saw last night.

Completely agree on the last sentence...hopefully they all keep mixing it up...interesting to see what Manny will do going forward too.

It’s hard to say porter was unlucky to be knocked down when it was such a beautifully set up clean shot that dropped him. If anything, he’s lucky he didn’t get ko’d. I have no idea how he stayed on his feet. I was questioning if his glove even touched.
