Comments Thread For: Porter's star rose quickly, but never shined as bright as Spence's

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - There was a time I was all in. Just more than five years ago, as I sat a few rows from the ring at the DC Armory in town to do a story on the latest Adrien Broner renaissance I believed Shawn Porter was the future of the welterweights. Floyd Mayweather Jr. was still 13 months away from starting a Pacquiao/Berto farewell tour...

Lyle acting like the fight is over already. At the very minimum Porter will give Spence a rough 12 rounds.

Showtime Shawn Porter was not fortunate enough to get to face Carlos Ocampo, and Lamont Peterson. Keith Thurman, was just not that guy. Some say Shawn Porter beating Adrien Broner trumps Errol's win over euro-bum Kells Brook tho...WE DONT KNOW!

I cant believe I also forgot Paulie Malignagi...hmm. Hey have you guys seen Shawn Porter co-hosting the PBC boxing report on FOX? I know its not Fighthype, but still.

Saying Porter didnt shinne like Spence is not matching equation. Porter has been in more tougher fight. Saying Broner and Granados are pedestrian means you dont know **** about boxing...

Keith, Shawn, and Danny, knew this day was coming! They tried to keep Errol out of the picture for as long as they could! Times Up! MAN DOWN!

Shawn does have a chance! Errol hasn't been roughed up! Shawn has to go full bully! Brook was big and strong, but Errol's body attack was too much! Everyone keeps talking about the eye, but Errol beat that body to death! Breaking his eye socket (not the same side as GGG) was just the icing on the cake! If Shawn can't stop Spence in 7, I think it's a wrap!

Look, it's fair to say that you don't think Porter will win, I don't either. I also would prefer to see Spence fight Crawford. But calling Porter a "brand name jobber" is disrespectful and highly disingenuous. Porter's been very competitive even in the couple of Ls he's taken - Kell Brook had to wait with baited breath for the result and personally I scored the fight for Porter when he fought Thurman, and that was when both of those guys were running red hot compared to the faded and broken versions of the same guys that Spence and Pacquiao beat more recently. Likewise, Broner was still a credible enough fighter in 2015, and he has a win over Danny Garcia last year. I think it's very disingenuous to say that Porter's career has been "meh" when his level of opposition has been so consistently high, and arguably much better than Spence's has been since he took the title from Brook. Aside from Bone, Granados and maybe Berto he hasn't really had any "gimme" fights recently whereas every single one of Spence's fights since he won his title have been mismatches to various degrees. Part of that speaks to how good Spence is but I also think it speaks to a reluctance to fight the best fighters available. I think Porter is a long overdue test for him.

Wow - not every day we get such a literal hit-piece from the staff writers here on a legit belt holder going into fight week. I really don't care who wins as long as the Crawford fight gets made, but if Shawn does pull it off, hopefully Lyle writes an equally conciliatory article. But I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Beat a lightweight, a guy with the broken eye and Chris Algieri...now that's a resume.

                Oh, and Ocampo
