  • Comments Thread For: Kovalev Would've Retired Had He Lost To Yarde

There was a lot of external pressure applied on Sergey Kovalev going into his fight against Anthony Yarde. That mandatory defense of his WBO light heavyweight title took place in Kovalev's hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia. And as if impressing his countrymen wasn't enough to think about, Kovalev had to win to secure an eight-figure payday for a much-discussed showdown with Canelo Alvarez.

Fighting guys on the verge of retirement is always a good look.

Its not unreasonable for anyone claiming he cashing out.
Especially agreeing to fight so soon after his last fight.

Yet after a certain WW wins, I know which fight you'll call for...

I think the tight schedule is good for Kovalev; reminds me of another guy with subpar work ethics who went straight from a fight to another camp and beat the champ in an upset.. some guys should be kept busy, less time for vodka and snickers.

I just hope Kov brings everything he has left to this fight. It's about that time for him to retire and honestly even if he were to win, I don't see him fighting again.

Yarde's speed bothered the hell outta Kov, and as soon as he got hit to the body he looked ready to go. We know Canelos faster and snapping hooks to the body are his bread and butter.

Kovs best chance is keep that long jab in Canelos face all night, keep his distance and tie him up when he gets in too close. Kov at this stage of his career still doesn't seem to know how to clinch effectively & only seems to try when he's already seriously hurt.

The closer the date gets, the clearer I envision Kovalev getting knocked out with a single body shot.

You speak about retirement before a major fight, you're done.

Facts....Brandon Rios comes to mind. But my problem with Sergey tho is that he was in a war and almost stopped
