I have seen some threads by Wilder fanboys saying that Fury is overrated and such...but they don't think this stuff through.

If Fury is overrated right now, that means Wilder definitely is since he couldn't even beat him and got clearly outboxed by the man. Think about it...Fury has beaten no one of note since his comeback.
The only legitimate opponent he faced was Wilder, but how good is Wilder really?

Wilders best win is Ortiz, someone who doesn't have a good resume. Then the question becomes how good is Ortiz actually? His best wins is Jennings and Ortiz was a 40 y/o with high blood pressure who almost wasn't cleared to fight vs Wilder. And still, he almost got Wilder out of there. Ortiz entire reputation is build around the eye test and him giving Wilder problems.

The same goes for Fury right now, he is considered #1 by some because he beat Klitschko 4 years ago (before his long lay-off) and because he outboxed Wilder.
But why is Wilder put on this pedestal? Fury just went life and death with Otto Wallin. That's the same Fury who outboxed Wilder.
Add to that the thin resume of Wilder and I think we got a case of a fighter being more hype than substance here. You got to ask yourself why Fury hasn't fought someone in the top 10 yet apart from Wilder after 5 fights back?

So how do we know how good Fury and Wilder really are right now? They haven't proven themselves against anyone but eachother. And if both are very overrated right now, it might explain why someone like Wallin could do so well Vs Fury. He is not the same fighter he was 4 years ago, not even remotely.

The cut made things scary. But even if the fight had been called, would anyone be declaring Wallin the superior fighter?


Heavyweight's carry a lot of parity. It's almost like dudes fighting with baseball bats. One mistake, or one well exploited opportunity, and they fight's over... regardless of anything that had been happening leading to that point.

I wouldn't pick many old time legends to fair particularly well against Wallin. I am sure he has his limitations. He mostly played spoiler. But I do think he and Ruiz really showed how good they are. And a lot of legends would have proven over-rated in losing to them... forget losing to Fury and Wilder.

Aside from the cut, he showed:

1) He could take Fury out of his comfort zone.

2) He could take a beating: Wilder, Cunningham, Wlad never took those shots from Fury. And who really thinks they would have faired as well?

3) He's got the heart to see it through: Fury took off the final round and got rocked. Sure, Wallin needed a KO. But he also realized how unlikely that was, and had little chance of winning. Most guys, regardless of what we think they should do, would have resigned themselves simply to surviving - knowing the risk of trading punches with Fury, and having already won a "moral" victory.

I dunno where Wallin goes from here. I don't wanna make too much of his performance. But i think he's got a bright future. If he turned out to be the best Heavyweight not named Tyson Fury, would anyone be surprised? Not me.
