Nigel Benn, 55, has signed for fight with ‘former world champ,’ reveals son Conor

NIGEL BENN has signed to fight against a former world champion in his comeback to the ring, son Conor has revealed.

The 55-year-old announced a boxing return after releasing training footage online and claiming: “I’m back”.

Nigel Benn, 55, has signed to fight an ex-WBC world champion in his comeback to the ring, son Conor revealed.

And son Conor, an unbeaten welterweight, told World Boxing News his dad will return THIS YEAR with a press-conference to announce the fight in two weeks.

He said: “It’s guaranteed he’s definitely fighting again.

“One hundred million per cent. Contracts have been signed. He’s been training since he retired but for the past two years training like an absolute nutter.

“Since I made my debut at the O2 four years ago, I think that’s when the feelings, the emotions come back as he was in the ring with me.

“There’s an opponent who has signed a contract. It’s a former WBC world champion and who fought only two years ago.

“The ins and outs I’m not too sure of, or what’s in the contract word for word. But it won’t be with Eddie Hearn, Frank Warren, Top Rank and ESPN or anything like that. It will be a Benn Promotions show.

What I know is it’s guaranteed. I have the date, the fight will be later in the year. It will be in the UK. That’s what I can tell you right now.” Conor Benn “But more will be announced when dad comes over. There should be a press conference, not next week but the week after.”

“What I know is it’s guaranteed. I have the date, the fight will be later in the year. It will be in the UK. That’s what I can tell you right now.”

Benn most recently laced up the gloves for a professional fight back in November 1996.

And the former two-weight world champion and British boxing icon was last year rumoured to be applying for a pro license to fight old foe Chris Eubank for a third time.

But British Board of Boxing Control secretary Robert Smith said: “It is unlikely they would get one."

However, Conor revealed his dad will return for a light-heavyweight contest, and will be sparring him in preparation for the astonishing comeback fight.

    He added: “I think it’s a light-heavyweight, at around 81kg I believe, and it’s someone rather lively.

I remember him in a kickboxing match as well. The guy he fought wrote and made very good kickboxing instructional videos.

Boxing is such a nutty ass sport waaaay too often.

This is why boxing needs some form of quality control. Like if an old guy was coming back after retiring he'd either after to start back out in some lower tier of 4 rder bs fights or he'd have to fight a guy who is currently on the level he was when he left.

At 175lb, I believe the opponent will likely be coming up from like Middleweight, Light Middleweight? He won't be fighting a former Light Heavy or Cruiser WBC champion who retired in the last two years lol. Benn himself isn't a big guy. I also don't think he would fight someone right off the bat who would have good chance of embarrassing him, lol. That rules out all the big names like RJJ, Hopkins and Mosley IMO. Could be someone obscure, like Richie Woodhall, and if it is it could turn into quite a sideshow haha! Thing that gets me is "former WBC champion who retired in past 2 years..." You could work out a shortlist based off that info. Another name who is competing at 175 is Ricardo Mayorga.
