  • Comments Thread For: Tyrone Spong Stops Jeyson Minda In Two; Usyk Clash Next?

Tyrone Spong picked up what could be his most important career win to date. What started out as a routine rust-shaking fight turned into a potential launching pad for a major opportunity later this year, as the unbeaten heavyweight has been rumored to be next in line for a shot at Oleksandr Usyk. Whether or not that fight materializes, Spong accomplished his initial goal in picking up his first win of 2019 after stopping Ecuador's Jeyson Minda in two rounds Saturday evening in Merida, Mexico. Two knockdowns produced the ending at 1:42 of round two.

Hopefully Usyk will debut at heavyweight against a real opponent.

You're right about that...Can't imagine USYK would be happy about this

      Spong Opponents = 118W - 104L
      Usyk Opponents = 333W - 63L

Usyk would win by split decision or unanimous vs Spong I Don't see a ko. For Spong was one of the best heavyweight kickboxers of this era and if you didn't get kod by knees kicks and elbows I doubt hands would do the trick. since this would be a boxing match usyk gonna win by decision

Getting KO'd in any combat sport is not about pure toughness. You may be correct that Sprong has withstood some serious abuse as a kickboxer. But not getting put to sleep is about defensive adjustments and having the kind of offense the opponent respects enough not to tee off on your noggin'.

Make no mistake, this fight would be a 100% full contact sparring session for Usyk. It would be to ensure his injured arm has healed and to give him a fight he can win with very little trouble after his first training camp for HW. If this is signed, or a fight similar to it, it is his team being careful with him. He wins this by TKO. I will spot the guy is tough and it will end with him on his feet. After all, the biggest questions about Usyk is his power he carries at 200+ and ability to absorb HW hits. But he will easily outbox and beat down someone of this caliber.

I watched Spong vs Nathan Corbett in heavyweight kickboxing many years ago. I was a huge Corbett fan. In the fight they both showed they were vulnerable in the chin department.

usuck needs a slow small hw. Spong also has not fought a top 50 boxer yet.

First of all I don't even know why Spong is still not with PBC, DAZN or Top Rank to be honest

I also remember him as a Kickboxer, I thought he was going to go MMA but he surprisingly went with boxing. He can punch for sure BUT I do think Usyk is skilled and experienced enough to Out-Box Spong but it is very risky given the Power he does have

The same Jeyson Minda that was getting stopped in the first round as a middleweight in 2017?
