In the last two weeks we have seen two fan favorites get stopped after clearly losing the entire fight. Fernando Vargas and Arturo Gatti are not the same fighters that stepped into the ring years ago. Something was missing from each fighter, Vargas’ intensity was not there, and Gatti’s body refused to go any further. As a fan of the sport I want both fighters to hang up the gloves and enjoy the fruits of their labor from ringside.
There are still many fans that want both fighters to continue, to give them one more fight and hopefully go out on a win, but I think this is selfish on the part of the fans. Real fans of either fighter should realize their bodies have taken them as
far as they can go, and at a certain point your body tells you enough is enough. Anyone who saw how sluggish Vargas was knows that this is not the young man who fought against Raul Marquez, Winky Wright, Ike Quartey and Felix Trinidad in the space of one year. The same can be said for Gatti. In that last round we saw a fighter who despite how hard he wanted to could not give anymore. He clearly had pushed himself very far, and finally the wars and fighting a man as hard nosed as he is were just too much for him.
Sure Gatti could possibly fight someone like Sharmba Mitchell or Chris Smith and maybe win. Maybe Vargas can go to middle or pickup a decent payday against Sergiy Dzinziruk in Europe, someone I consider to be a very strong fighter at 154, but the truth is he would take a beating against Dzinziruk and be worst off at middle. The truth is neither of these fighters has to worry about money, but they do have to worry about their health.
As a fan of the sport and a fan of anyone willing to give it their all for the W I would like to thank both Fernando Vargas and Arturo Gatti. Thank you for giving us memorable fights, thank you for sacrificing your bodies to entertain and inspire us, and thank you for always being true warriors. All fans should cherish the memories you two warriors have left us, and let each of you settle down into a life devoid of battles where you can enjoy your very hard earned rewards. If you both decide to retire I would like to say good bye guys, and thanks for the memories.
