The beginning of the end for Nigel Benn...

    ...in this fight atleast.
I wonder how things would've been if it was Nigelito who won.

    What a right hand!
I love Nigelito, but that right hand makes my anus wet.

Honestly, I would say the beginning of the end for Nigel was the McClellan fight. It's hard for a fighter to rebound mentally from something like that...and his record afterwards backs me up.

Gabriel Ruelas never realy recovered emotionally from killing that lopez kid.

Ray Mancini didn't hang onto the title much longer after the Duk Koo Kim tragedy.

Ezzard Charles, while winning the World Heavyweight Championship after killing..?..shoot, well, anyway, he never punched with impunity again after that....nor did Griffith after Paret.

Benn lost heart, IMO, after the McClellan tragedy; but that's just my opinion.

Nigel said he kissed Gerald's hand and prayed that he would be okay. He said had he died, he would've quit.

            Nigel the Suicidal

Benn says he was desperate not to hurt his family

Former world champion boxer Nigel Benn has said the despair and anguish caused by his addiction to women led him to try and take his own life.
The 37-year-old sportsman described how he took an overdose and attached a hosepipe to the exhaust of his car in a bid to end his life because he could not bear hurting his wife and children with his inability to remain faithful.
Speaking on the BBC's That's Esther programme the former WBO Middleweight and WBC Super Middleweight said: "It was an addiction, not heroin or anything like that, but to women.

"I didn't care whether they were tall, short, wide or very wide. I had a very low self-esteem from my ex-wife and I just got to a low point when I said: 'Right, this is it'.

"The last time I had an affair and I got really low, I went somewhere on my own and tried to take my life.

"The addiction was just eating me away. I thought I just couldn't keep hurting my wife and my kids."

Benn said he did not know whether his suicide attempt was a genuine desire to end his life or a cry for help.

Since the incident, the ex-boxer - who knocked out 35 opponents in 42 professional fights, has been receiving Christian counselling.

That's Esther is due to be screened at noon on Sunday.

                FIRST PERSON
                NIGEL BENN AT PEACE
Taking guard with the angelsTHE WORLD CHAMPION BOXER FEARED IN HIS HEYDAY AS THE “DARK DESTROYER” HAS FOUND THE LIGHT – AND A LIFE OF PEACE IN MALLORCA. MANDY VAN ZUYDAM FINDS OUT MORE.

There’s a buzz in the Palma Nova parking lot. It’s the meeting point for a family outing to Lluc Monastery led by former world champion boxer Nigel Benn. The man who once fought in front of 70,000 people and who has partied and guest DJ’d around the world is stepping out.

“I don’t go out much any more,” he says, admitting you won’t find him sightseeing in Soller or dining in Deia. “I am just happy being here and enjoying what I have. I’m quite content to sit by the pool with my family eating some chicken and baguettes from Caprabo.”

Indeed, Costa de la Calma seems the perfect address for the quiet, unpretentious life he now leads with wife Carolyne and four of his seven children: Layla, one; twins Conor and India, nine; and Renée, 12.

Nineteen years ago Nigel Benn was on the verge of achieving beyond his wildest dreams. He turned professional in 1987 and had a run of 22 consecutive knockout wins, earning him the title “Dark Destroyer” and a reputation as one of the hardest punchers of all time.

Then, in 1990, he won the WBO middleweight title and in 1992 the WBC world super middleweight title, which he defended until 1996.

“I had a great career with only one bad fight in my life.” His voice lowers as he recalls how his opponent (American Gerald McClellan) was left paralysed and blind and how his victory left him with a damaged nose, damaged jaw, damaged kidney and blood in his urine for three days.

“But looking back on it I can’t say I was very happy – I’d say I was in a dark tunnel for 10 years. It was a very sinful, 100mph life with lots of women, drugs and rock n’ roll.

“People always think I must have had so much fun, but let me tell you, fun is not about hurting people, hurting your family, being betrayed by friends, being treated like a meal-ticket, sleeping with different women.

“I also had a lot of anger. I went through a lot – the breakdown of my first marriage, I had to fight for custody of my kids, I had friends who I thought were friends but weren’t. I was also carrying around a lot of issues because my brother got killed when I was eight. I couldn’t understand why my hero was taken away. In fact, it’s only since I came to Mallorca that I’ve dealt with my hurts.”

Initially Mallorca did not hold much appeal for Nigel, who did a lot of his training in Tenerife, and it was only at the insistence of Carolyne – “my guardian angel” – that he’s here today.

“She’d always wanted to see Mallorca and booked herself on a package holiday, but I don’t do that and wouldn’t come with her. When she got home she was adamant I should invest in a holiday home here. She brought me back and it was like ‘wow, wow and wow…’ In seven months we’d moved here – had everything set up.

“God’s hand was in it, without a doubt. We only looked at two houses and bought the second one because we knew instantly it was what we wanted. And then, as we flew back to England, we received a cash offer on our house there.”

Since arriving on the island four years ago, Nigel’s faith has intensified and he has become increasingly involved in Christian ministry, holding a church in his home every Sunday.

“I certainly didn’t expect to be doing what I am doing now,” he says. “ At first I thought I was just moving away from the gangster lifestyle in England to relax with my family, but God has told me he has work for me to do here.

“It’s not an easy job – you get doors slammed in your face – but I believe I’m meant to open a church on the island and help transform people’s lives. I want to show people that God is real, that the Bible doesn’t cost a thing. I remember the days when I was having counselling for my problems and it would cost me £300 a hit. And then I’d be trying to match Jupiter and Saturn to tell me about my horoscope and I still wouldn’t get it.

“Mallorca is a wonderful place to live but there are a lot of people on this island with issues. I don’t think I’d be in a position to help them if I hadn’t been through the difficult times in my life to get where I am now. I had to go through heartache, pain, nervous breakdown, a suicide attempt, everything…”

The door opens and Nigel’s wife comes in with fresh fruit juice. His eyes light up with pride. She has a gentle air and dislikes the spotlight – the wind beneath his wings. “Carolyne is the reason I have all this,” he says, waving his hand across the terrace towards the sea.

“She has stuck by me through thick and thin. I could have easily ended up skint but because of her we have paid-up properties here and in England, and still have enough money to look after seven kids and my dad as well – she’s incredible.”

These days Nigel’s life revolves around his church, his family and his newfound passion - gardening. He keeps himself in peak shape by boxing in his home gym (listening to his favourite funky house music) and wrestling with son Connor. He also does personal training for a few people who have approached him for help. “I think if you are battling with weight issues, it’s hard to know who you really are.”

Mallorca has provided a clean break and the couple are not in contact with many people from their former lifestyle. “Most of them are very shallow. It’s all about money, how much they can buy, how much they have in the bank, what clothes they can afford. Why can’t they do something good with their money?

“Anyway, they’d probably find my life boring now. But I know it has changed for the better. Hell, I’m not perfect, but I’ve come a long way and I’ve learned that it is so easy to be bad, and so hard to be good. But I no longer need to go in search of ‘fun’ – what I have found is peace.”
