To me what Jones did made sense. He had nothing left to prove at that point at LightHeavy and was known among boxing fans as a great fighter but wasn’t a cross over Star. Jumping up to HW gave Jones the opportunity to be in a big PPV that reached beyond hardcore fans and get a big cheque , get known more among casuals for trying to accomplish something in the sport in the Sports glamour division that was historic . Was Ruiz the easiest target , yeah but Jones was never going to fight Lewis who was too big and tall

Canelo doesn’t need to expand his profile and fighting Kov isn’t the biggest most prolific fight available & he still has sh.it to prove at his division which is MW / The Majority believe he lost to Golovkin both times and seems to not want a trilogy fights in the immediate future & Andrade could have been a fight for all the marbles in a historic meaningful fight but Andrade seems to never have been a serious option , it seems Canelo wants to fight Kov , just who’s the perceived easiest strap holder who’s old clearly on the decline and who’s Value is only in his name/ Just like when Canelo fought Feilding he’s being opportunistic for accolades and accomplishments And finding the easiest targets to be a 3/4 Division Champion.

I agree with what you are saying. Both men deliberately picked the weakest champion and never considered fighting the strongest champion. Canelo made it clear he would only fight Kovalev at 175 and would not consider fighting any of the 3 young undefeated champions. To me that is cherry picking and worse if there is a catchweight. Jones only went after Ruiz who was a very weak champion. With today's system of 4 champs per weight class guys can move up in weight by fighting the weakest possible champion. Canelo did that when he cherry picked Fielding who was a very weak fighter instead of fighting Callum Smith who had KOed Fielding in two rounds before Canelo fought him. I would never call Jones or Canelo a coward. They are both great fighters who fought many dangerous opponents.
