Comments Thread For: Kovalev: Yarde Says That He's A Lion, But For Me, He's A Kitten!

Sergey Kovalev eventually laughed and turned away as Anthony Yarde stared into his eyes Friday afternoon. Kovalev figures Yarde was trying to intimidate him after they weighed in for their light heavyweight title fight Saturday night in Chelyabinsk, Russia, Kovalev's hometown. It won't work, according to Kovalev, because the defending WBO 175-pound champion has much more experience against championship-caliber opposition than Yarde, who's undefeated, yet untested.

Says a lot that Kovalev never had the courage to move up to cruiser. Nearly every great tried to move up and win. Enough of this guy.

Its a 25lb jump these days. Kovalev enters the ring at the heaviest a full 15lbs lower than the actual weight limit, most cruisers rehydrate to 210 to 216lbs.So no, it says nothing at all.

175 is the bigger division, there were good fights there and still are, there was every reason for him to stay at 175.

Now that he is 36, he aint moving up to fight no 210lb mini heavyweight.

You realize the cruiserweights today are the same in ring weight as Joe Fraizer right?

If he did it he would have to be carefully matched against a handpicked style. Then people would complain he isnt fighting the best at cruiser and fought handpicked.... So better to stay at 175 and fight the best available.

I think boxers usually move up for 2 reasons. Either they have a money fight in the next division or they can't make weight anymore. By the way, what is so great of moving up in weight and beating Rocky Fielding type of champ?

Kov’s a OG he knows if he stands and trades he will get unstuck

That’s yarde’s best chance of winning .... kov comes to slug with a guy like yardie it’s curtains

He’s a top boxer / ex top boxer he should use his skills untill late in the fight

Not all...Hagler never did. Its a big jump to cruiser, MOST light heavys dont make that jump...it's not a mark on his courage that he didn't move up. Some are content to do their thing in their own division

Most cruisers nowadays are 2-3 inches taller than kov and walk around at 210-220 at least. I can’t see kov walking around at more that 190-195. Also there are several ATGs that never moved up hagler and monzon namely. Great LHWs like Conteh never moved up
