Golovkin was approached by Cotto and the WBC to allow Cotto to fight Canelo by accepting a step aside fee. The agreement was the winner was to fight Golovkin. Cotto lost then stated that he was considering not paying Golovkin the money he was owed. Golovkin had to make a statement that his lawyers were going to get involved in order to get paid. Canelo subsequently gave up his title rather than fight Golovkin. There was no way in hell that Cotto was going to get in the ring with a monster like Golovkin. Cotto won the belts at 159 and defended then at 157 and 155. Canelo won the belt at 155.
