Well, we've touched upon this subject a number of times, but is it really true or is it the media just pushing one perspective ?
Since I've been a part of NSB, I've grown to realize that many men surpass my general knowledge of boxing and boxing history.
Still, I am unable to find peers in everyday life that are aware of contenders, prospects, or even many title fights that are coming up.
Is it where I live ? (doubt it) Is it just the USA ?
And if boxing really is "dead" in the US, does the article properly explain why, and will it change in either direction ?
At any rate, I'm thankful for this forum discussion, despite some of its downfalls.
Peace.
I say B.S! I attended the Murphy's boxing card in Massachusetts yesterday and it was a large and excited crowd. I attend many cards from different promoters and generally the crowds are large. Will boxing ever be as popular as MLB or the NFL? No but that was never the case. What does hurt the sport is that promoters need to do a better job of working together. The best fighters need to fight each other. Period! Spence/Crawford, Ramirez/Prograis, Wilder/Ruiz, etc!Comment

Are u a member of a baseball, hockey, basketball forum though? I hear ya. I think boxing doesn’t do itself any favours. It milks the loyal fans while always trying to cater to the casuals. I’m just glad in today’s cancel culture it’s not being attacked. It’s a truly international sport and that helps. I know I’d rather even talk boxing than watch a lot of sports. “Dead” is just a typical buzzword to grab attention. U only write an article claiming a sport is dead knowing it isn’t cause ur hoping to stir controversy. I mean we’re talking about it on here. Money drives narratives, until the top boxers don’t earn giant purses even compared to other sports stars it will be far from dead."Boxing can-but won't- provide that."
Sadly, I think he's right.
The average American has no idea who the players are or what's going on. All this hate about "casual" fans on here has shown the price that is paid. No one cares. I'm a casual fan of a lot of sports and a big reason I am now is because of boxing's sagging structure that doesn't have the best fight the best. In other sports, the best have to take on the best. They don't have a choice. That's how it should be. I know boxing is different, but at the end of the day as a fan, why should I care? It's like I'm supposed to be patient and prop up the sport that is supposed to entertain me? Hell, I can just go watch a baseball or basketball or hockey game. Why even bother? Boxing has made some ****** deicsion and then Saudi Arabia one is about as dumb as you can get. AJ and Ruiz will not build their names over there. Very ******. And like he says, there are very few fights to look forward to. I'm glad Spence and Porter are fighting but who expects Porter to win? We need those 50/50 fights. Without them, boxing may not die but it sure takes a nap and induces us into one...until we find othr sports to watch. I've even been watching some UFC lately. I used to never do that, but well, what else is going on?
Great post, my friend.Comment

I actually did join a baseball forum recently. Haha. Bu that's the first time I ever have, which maybe is a bad sign. It's just been so blah in the boxing world for a while. I mean, hell, the only fights worth talking about this year are Ruiz-Joshua and Pac-Thurman and if those fights had gone like most assumed, this would be the dullest year in a while. It's been saved by upsets but those fights were intended not to be. I mean, Pac-Thurman was kind of close going in but very few thought Ruiz would beat Joshua. So the matchmaking just isn't cutting it. However, I will say that Beterbiev-Gvozdyk should be excellent. I think it will be a barnburner and somebody's getting KO'd in a unification. Now that's what sells tickets and keeps us coming back for more. Spence-Porter is okay but it's not great. Most are expecting Spence to beat Porter and that it won't be that hard. Monster-Donaire would be much more interesting if Donaire was five years younger but I don't think most are giving him a chance. Again, just not very exciting. Guys today make a lot for giving little while guys of the past gave all and made little. Can't we find a happy medium? Haha. I don't know, man. I think boxing shoots itself in the foot more than most sports. In the end, two guys hitting each other will never die out but damn, this isn't exactly a golden era. More like an aluminum era- wrap up another showcase BS fight in aluminum foil and throw it on the grill. It'll get done but there won't be much flavor. Are u a member of a baseball, hockey, basketball forum though? I hear ya. I think boxing doesn’t do itself any favours. I like the food analogy, relatable to all and accurate. To add to that we are usually just given bread as undercards. I’d love to see cards again where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. See sum of the champs at the rarely publicized lighter weights get on sum undercards against #1 contenders. It would be a nice bone to true fans. I like seeing the young prospects but they’re usually against carefully matched opposition.I actually did join a baseball forum recently. Haha. Honestly I have read only the first four posts..at least so far.
Most likely I will be the most qualified here to talk about this topic.
Boxing is and ISN'T "dead".
Let's take a look.
Lets look back. Lets look at now.
Back....to 1971. Why '71? Of course that's easy analysis.
Ali-Frazier 1. "The" Fight of the Century.
Was boxing dead then? Well....it was not "well". But..that was *special fight. It was (indeed) a CROSSOVER ATTRACTION.
Is Boxing dead in 2019? According to any "crossover index" boxing is dormant if not dead.
The world population has MORE THAN DOUBLED since '71. The crossover interest hardly existed at all in '71. But...Ali-Frazier 1 (as we are saying) was a special fight.
Now....we'll find still the "nitch interest". Die hards like myself seak out sites like this one. But, even a fight as "nifty" as Fury-Wilder gonna be utterly ignored by vast majority of the "GENERAL media".
In one word..it's the General media representing "the cross over".
Now....I'm only talking FIELD STUFF so far.
"Specilization" only cure known. That will be to FIX PROBLEMS. What are Boxing's problems modern day? There's only three reoccurring that I KNOW CAN-BE SOLVED. That...don't yet have proper pressure on it. Judgeing fights is "problem" at times but......I don't count it. It is a rather rarity and has "constant presure" on it already.
-we cont this conversation- Anyone here know anything?
By the way.....I'll "hold my own" as History buff too. Ah....I KNOW their many lot greater than I am on that but....."learning" recent years true buffs a hard one to find too.Comment
