Hatton Hints At Moving Back Down To 140

The BBC reports that Ricky Hatton could possibly vacate his WBA welterweight title and move back down to 140 pounds, instead of a staging a low-profile fight against mandatory Oktay Urkal in America on December 9. After watching his option of fighting Arturo Gatti go down the drain after Gatti was stopped in nine rounds by WBC champion Carlos Baldomir, Hatton is looking below for big money fights. [details]

Agreed. This is a smart career move as long as he doesn't have problems making weight. He was good but not great so far at 147... could be getting used to the new weight, or could be that he is just better at 140. Beating Collazo is no cake walk but it wasn't as impressive as his win over Tyszu (who, imo, was a better opponent)

and some people in here are going to say he is avoiding Floyd, when Floyd has only showed interest as of late in Mosley and Dela..and Spinks ofcourse because he picked up a title at 154

Hatton want's no part of PBF now. He wanted what 13 million? Everyone knows overpricing is ducking. PBF would tee of that head.

I really don't like to use the term "avoiding" or "ducking" when talking about boxing even if I don't like a fighter. These guys fight for a living... so how much fear could they have. If people mean fear of losing, well plenty of athletes have that. Anyway, you are right about the Mayweather-Hatton fight. Neither guy really wants it right now, and while this is disappointing for fans... its alright. Both Hatton and Floyd have at least 5 years left in their careers...plenty of time to still make a mega-fight. Let Floyd fight his "legacy" battles with DLH and Shane. Win or lose, there will still be a market for a Hatton-Mayweather fight. And I think the most competitive fight between them will be at 140. So in the end, this may be the smart business move for both Hatton and Mayweather.

How in the hell can you guys say this is a good thing? Name one good thing about it. The only good thing about it is that he's probally better at 140 but that means nothing when all the big fights and money are at 147. He said he wants the big fights but yet he's going to 140?

He is just going to try to beat up on guys that he thinks he's much bigger then like Castillo & Chico. Everyone moves to 147, then Hatton moves out and you guys say its a good thing. Why didnt he let someone like Chico know of this? He couldve told Chico that if Baldy wins then I will come back down. Do you think Chico wanted Casamayor more then Hatton?

There is no one at 140. All he is going to do is end up getting beat by someone like Vivian Harris and end up making no money at all. I dont like this move one bit. Chico is probally not even going to 140 now. He will probally fight Casamayor, then Diaz, and maybe Pac. The only guy at 140 for Hatton to fight is Castillo.

I actually would love to see him fight my boy Paulie because I think Hatton would be in trouble. He doesnt have Cotto's power

Yeah but there are a few interesting fights out there at 140. Paulie would definitely be interesting and even Harris if he wins on Saturday. Plus, I believe both Hatton and Mayweather are best at 140. Floyd only weighed 146 on the night of the fight against Judah... clearly this is the highest Floyd should ever fight at. So a future fight between Hatton and Mayweather at 140 is a very real possibility. Also, Hatton can move between the divisions as much as he would like if he truly doesn't believe titles are what is important. So Hatton has plenty of options. I understand where you are coming from in wanting to see good fights, but did you think Hatton was impressive in his debut at 147? If Hatton can make the weight at 140... he should continue to fight at his best weight. Should he risk his record fighting at a more exciting weight where he isn't comfortable?

Paulie needs to beat *ONE* name fighter before he gets another shot at the big time. The kid also needs plenty of time to recover from the beating Cotto gave him.
