Comments Thread For: Michael Conlan: I Won't Fight Carl Frampton

Michael Conlan has poured water on the idea of a clash against Carl Frampton. The WBO Inter-Continental and WBA Inter-Continental featherweight champion claimed the latter of his two titles earlier this month. Conlan starred at the Feile on Phobail festival at Falls Park in Belfast on August 3, exclusively live on BT Sport in the UK, when he stopped Diego Alberto Ruiz in the ninth of 10 scheduled rounds.

This would be a terrible fight at this point in time. Tensions in Northern Ireland are at their highest between the two communities since the days of the troubles due to Brexit, and the newest idiot in charge in the UK is not helping matters at all. Pitting two popular Fighters from each side of the divide against each other would provide a focal point for that tension, regardless of the fact that Frampton doesn't consider himself representing the unionist community. I like the fact that conlan recognises this issue, shows boxing hasn't reduced his faculties just yet. While it would be a decent fight there's plenty of other fights Bob can make right now

I get that, and understand the political and sectarian complexities of the matter particular with how Brexit and the rising nationalist tide in England is effecting the border issue in Ireland. But “we are friends” is a terrible excuse, it happens all the time in this sport. And they don’t have to fight in Belfast or Derry, they don’t even have to fight in the uk at all....they could have a fight in Boston, New York, or Chicago wherein the cities’ large ethnically Irish population would come out and support it no matter that the sects are back in Ulster. In fact most Americans of Irish ancestry are too ignorant of their origins to understand that they are actually scotch-Irish rather than native Irish....the only thing they would care about is two Irish guys are fighting. Would do huge numbers in Boston especially

Holy Moly what a shout. Him or Kiko would do for now, both quality European level guys that can determine if he's ready for a title shot yet.

Don't do it. There's nothing to be gained and the world is full of featherweights.
