Comments Thread For: Vergil Ortiz: I'm at Welterweight For Good, It Was Time To Move Up

Vergil Ortiz Jr. may not have liked the way he obtained his latest win but certainly loved the preparation heading into the night. The unbeaten blue-chip prospect enjoyed a homecoming headliner, overcoming a challenging start to break down and stop Antonio Orozco in six rounds Saturday evening at Verizon Theatre in his hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas. By his own admission, it wasn't the best performance of his one career.

Alberto Machado, Jarrett Hurd, Teofimo Lopez, and Danny Jacobs, take notes!

With Hurd I think his skills wouldn't match well with the middleweights, I kno he's naturally bigger than GGG, Canelo an his body probably can't handle that weight cut much longer but I don't see it working out for him. He wouldn't beat Lemieux, Andrade, Jacobs or even Jermall

        Ortiz showed killer instincts

I thought it was a dam good performance however he gets hit a little to much for my liking and many of the guys at 147 are killers so unless he improves quickly say away from the big boys and I don’t have to say there names but y’all know they are.

I digress. Is that Thurman in the Priceline commercial? The romantic getaway couple?

I think Vergil will do very good at 147. He is the real deal and there is a lot of hype jobs at 147. I think Vergil is very good but I don't think he's ready for a guy like Crawford.

Ortiz should wait and see how he does with a guy like Thurman or Danny Garcia before he steps in with a killer like Crawford.

He could be the real deal but need to see more from him. He can't just rely on speed and power. Take Teofimo for example. People kept saying he's the real deal since he kept taking out his opponents early. Lopez and his crew believed that they're taking over the division and look what happened with the end result. Suddenly, power and speed proved different otherwise that Lopez was nowhere near ready for a title. Sure Ortiz is maintaining his knockout ratio intact, but the reality is that at 147 there's a lot of live dogs that can take a punch and have superior skills (i.e. ring IQ, head movement, footwork, defense) . He is 21 and will learn as he progresses. Fortunately for Ortiz, he's not delusional and knows his place

He was indeed a BIG 140, same with Mario Barrios them dudes are still growing and still filling out. Even 147 might be a short stay for him at this rate and he might max out at 160-168

As if 147 couldn't get any deeper in talent now you add Ortiz. Now hopefully we get to see all of them against each other with no Politics getting in the way when it is time to make all those fights

I think he was so close to title shots at 140 he shoulda stayed there to pick up a belt just to boost his name & start a legacy for himself.

147 is prime time sh^t & I like his odds at 140 vs anyone, but not so much at 147.
