A major flaw in the DAZN model

With other networks like Showtime, FOX, ESPN, and HBO the fighters aspire to become PPV stars. With DAZN the fighters aspire to become DAZN fighters. Like GGG & Canelo.

With PPV the promoter and the fighter profit off PPV sales. With Canelo's DAZN deal Golden Boy doesn't get a cut of Canelo's pay. They're his promoter, not his manager. So how does Golden Boy make a profit off of Canelo fights on DAZN? Venue fee & ticket sales,? Which still has to be split with Canelo.

So every fighter on DAZN under a promoter wishes to become a DAZN fighter but that's not beneficial to the promoter.

This is why Hearn didn't sign Joshua to DAZN and Oscar making promises he came keep in order to get his deal with DAZN

With that DAZN deal Golden Boy is getting $18 mil a year to put on fights where they pay Ryan Garcia $50k while having a revenue of $1 mil. Golden Boy is now at the point where most of their profit isn't coming from Canelo.

They're self sustained without Canelo. Now I understand why Oscar & Gomez backed Diaz instead of Canelo.

Let me ask you this.... You really think it was Diaz who negotiated with the IBF to have Canelo stripped of the IBF belt if Golden Boy and Lou Dibella didn't come up with a deal for a fight by Thursday??

You know DAZN is going to fail when they are paying derveryanchenko $5.5 million to fight GGG. That boy is like a F tier PBC fighter in terms of popularity

And they upset the emperor Canelo?!?!?!?

Canelo needs to squad up with PBC, Uncle Al will save the day.

Yes. According to the article because of Oscar's absenteeism Diaz has had to take more control. I think they thought they would have a deal so the agreement was you don't call the purse bid and if we don't have the deal done by this date Canelo will vacate

Its not a flaw, and its really no different than a fighter signed to HBO, or whoever. The broadcast rights contract is just a flat fee for the broadcast rights. Sure, PPV is a different entity, but less than 1/10th of 1% of all pro fighters will ever headline a PPV, so its not really a widespread concern.

And depending on the promotional contract structure with the fighter, the promoter can profit off the live gate, foreign rights (in markets not serviced by DAZN), event sponsors, etc, etc. And they might get option deals on opponents of their A-list fighters, which is an entirely different revenue stream. And the promotional agreement itself might even stipulate some type of revenue share on the broadcast rights.

Believe me, the promoter wont be eating cat food anytime soon.......

I don't know about that man.

Why seek to become a PPV star, with all the pressure that comes with it, when you are getting paid just as much or even way more on an app?

Look at GGG, for example. How many PPVs would someone like GGG need to make $16 mil per fight? I'm sure DAZN is a God-sent for people like Jacobs, GGG, and many others.

They should enjoy it while it lasts.

Golden isn't eating cat food at all. They're eating better than ever before with their own deal. Finally able to make money without Canelo.

Which is a good thing because they aren't making much from Canelo without PPV.

And nobody has any idea how much DAZN pays GBP in licensing, if any at all, for a fighter they've signed to broadcast his fights. Golden Boys job is to promote Canelo. Thats it.
