The career (so far) of Gennady Golovkin

Golovkin turned pro in 2006 after an outstanding amateur career. He had his first fight in Germany, where 17 of his first 18 fights would take place. The feared middleweight from Kazakhstan had what can only be described as a soft-touch opponent for his debut - Gabor Balogh W1 L22. Golovkin got his pro career up and running with a KO victory.

Having rolled over five more victims, Golovkin heading into 2007 with a record of 6-0 with 6 KO's. A regulation win over Simon Mokoena was followed by a step up in class when he faced Siarhei Khamitski at Fight Night Arena in Cologne. Khamistki entered the fight with a record of W19 L3 D1. Khamistki was a very good fighter, and in his later career had massive wins over the previously unbeaten and highly regarded Frank Buglioni (world title challenger) and Adam Etches 18-0 at the time. Still, he was no match for GGG.

Golovkin would rack up 9 more wins in double quick time, before facing his next very good opponent - Mikhail Makarov came to town and the bookies couldn't split them. Makarov was 10-0, but Golovkin didn't just beat him, he sent him to an early retirement in 2009. Makarov returned for one more bout 5 years later in a fight he won before retiring again. Stating that, "I wish I was Golovkin, But I am not, so I'm retiring again."

After this step up in class, GGG decided that he would never look back, that he'd only fight world champions or other top contenders from now on. He was being avoided by everyone, and this was the reason at this stage that he hadn't received a world title shot.

The next man brave enough to face him was Milton Nunez (WBA interim title) W21 L1 D1 and a KO machine himself. Golovkin stopped him with ease. Nunez would later go on to take Matvey Korobov the distance.

Next up came Nilson Julio Tapia (WBA FULL TITLE FIGHT), a very good fighter who a couple of years earlier lost a much debated MD to Austin Trout (conqueror of Miguel Cotto) Again Golovkin sent his fans home happy with a KO victory. Good wins over Kassim Ouma, Lajuan Simon and Makoto Fuchigami further enhanced Golovkin's already very good resume and reputation.

A massive fight was to come next, his opponent Grzegorz Proksa W28 L1 and was known as Super G, so it was billed as Triple G vs Super G. Super G had just avenged his only loss by beating Kerry Hope in a rematch and went into the fight full of confidence. Golovkin won again by KO. It was a fantastic and memorable win.

Gabriel Rosado was next up, always a worthy opponent and another win ticked for for GGG. Decent wins against Ishida, Macklin, Stevens and Osumanu followed, before beating Daniel Geale 30-2 and big punching Marco Antonio Rubio with 59 wins to his name.

Skilled Englishman Martin Murray came next, at this time Martin Murray was in his prime, and a couple of years earlier had outboxed and twice dropped a prime Sergio Martinez only to be robbed on the scorecards. Golovkin battered Murray for 11 Rounds and the world class Englishman was never the same again.

Willie Monroe Jr. W19 L1 was next up, another top name For the Golovkin list of victims, the very slick Monroe was no match for the Eastern European powerhouse. He followed this up by beating David Lemieux W34 L2, who at the time was in many a top 10 P4P list.

Dominic Wade W18 L0 followed and to this day, Golovkin is the only man to beat him. Another top 10 P4P fighter Kell Brook 36-0 followed and he was stopped in round 4. Continuing his Top 10 P4P opponents streak, Golovkin fought Daniel Jacobs, winning 8 of the 12 rounds and scoring a knockdown.

Cotto was still running from Golovkin at this stage, fans around the world lost patience with him and declared his avoidance as a win for Golovkin. So Golovkin beat Cotto by way of CO (chickened-out)

The biggest fight in boxing followed. Fighting for the coveted P4P #1 spot. Golovkin vs Canelo. It was a brilliant fight with Golovkin winning 116-112, but poor scoring saw the fight declared a draw. But at least Golovkin left with his belts, and his newly acquired P4P #1 title.

Golovkin's comeback fight saw him make light work of the world class Vanes Martirosyan, before facing Canelo in a rematch. Another great fight and after 9 rounds, Canelo was 5-4 ahead, but Golovkin found a whole new level and stormed the last 3 rounds taking the fight 115-113, only to be robbed to an MD loss.

Now on the trail of a 3rd fight with Canelo, which has parralels to Manny and Marquez where they kept awarding the fight to the wrong guy, Golovkin saw off top contender Steve Rolls, and has lined up the world class Derevyanchenko next, before destroying Canelo in May 2020. He states "Canelo will not see the second round."
