I'm a big fan of Mayweather and his exploits inside/outside the ring. And it's great to see people come from nothing and make it to the top. He also did it his own way and turned hatred into hundreds of millions of dollars.
However, he wasn't perfect and like every gift, there's always a curse lurking. I believe Mayweather started this era of fickle minded fans and boxers who're scared of taking risks - to protect their unbeaten records. He ushered a new era where boxing is about cherry picking and padding up resumes. The best aren't fighting the best and it's only a matter of time before people start losing interest in boxing again, thus taking the money that has been pumped into the sport recently away from the sport.
Imagine where boxing would be if Spence and Crawford can do a trilogy. Tank vs Lomachenko. Wilder vs AJ. Etc. The heavyweight division brought excitement back to the sport via the rise of Anthony Joshua. And now that he lost, a lot of casuals who're the driving force of the commercial value of the sport have started losing interest. And the only way the sport can keep the momentum going is to keep getting the best to fight the best. If not, I see MMA taking the momentum away from boxing again.
