Comments Thread For: Recent Ring Tragedies Alter Perspective For Fighters & Fans Alike

By Corey Erdman - ARLINGTON, TX-Jose Ramirez and Maurice Hooker gave boxing fans everything they could have asked for on Saturday night: a title unification bout between two champions on opposite sides of boxing's network and promotional divide, a toe-to-toe slugfest with ebb and flow, a conclusive ending...

Ths unfortunate deaths of Dadashev and Santillan reinforced what most of us keep tucked away in our subconcious. Boxing is a beautiful yet brutal sport. That may sound like a cliche but if the object is to punch someone in the head there obviously can be serious health ramifications or worse. The severely injured like Magomed Abdusalamov and Pritchard Colon are just two examples of the many that leave the ring with severe health defects. In my opinion there are things in life that are worse than dying. What if anything can be done to prevent such tragedies? Should every fight be stopped as soon as someone is stunned? That would also cause an uproar not only among the fans but some of the fighters themselves. Can a dangerous sport like boxing ever be made safe or safer? Maybe the experts can come up with something. For a fan like me I am at a loss!

Being hit repeatedly even with gloves is very dangerous. Brawling is less dangerous than boxing. Boxing should be reduced further to 10 rounds for championship fights and lesser rounds for non title fights.

That's why I never clown guys for being defensive minded fighters.

Guys accused guys like Erislandy Lara of being runners as opposed to being a defensive fighter.

I have my criticisms of Floyd Mayweather, but him being defensive minded is not one of them.

I always thought the "blood & guts" type of boxing fans are not really fans of boxing, they're just sadists.

Im all for more safety esp with more qualified doctors and letting the E European kid walk back to dressing room was a HUGE mistake that will end in a lawsuit. With that being said you can only make boxing so safe without ruining it. A lot of these writers and commentators are hypocrites though and acting like they just found out getting hit in head is bad for you esp since the CTE NFL story broke. Everyone has known that since at least the 40s. If they feel guilty about being involved in a brutal sport that saves more lives then it destroys then get out and do something else. The fight with MD was NOT stopped too late, sometimes it just cant be avoided. I think they need to start with not letting shot fighters to keep fighting(R Jones,Toney) and more prefight tests. Stopping fights sooner is not a problem imo and whether this sounds insensitive or not the fans pay good money to go/watch these fights and if a fight needs to be stopped so quick because one fighter gets stunned and the commentators think he cant win then maybe the fight should not have been made in the 1st place. Coming from someone who has boxed and has watched family box.
