The guy is obviously a big welterweight, and to me it seems like his biggest asset. The fact that his body allows him to walk into the ring as a middleweight against welterweights. Yet he isn't consistently blasting guys out of there in spectacular fashion.

I mean, we know that amir khan isn't the biggest puncher going. He does have some pop but nothing special, it's more the speed factor that gets him the knockdowns. But even he managed to get Lo Greco out in 1. Lo Greco didn't exactly fair well against Spence but he did take his shots relatively well. Spence never seems to vary his punches either in terms of power and speed. Everything comes at the same pace, I can only imagine how quickly an elite level fighter could figure out his timing.

I suppose only time will tell, don't misquote me. I think he's solid, and i'm sure i'm missing something. So tell me what i'm missing.
I made a very similar thread to this about 2 years ago, so I know where you're coming from. What's youre seeing is the same as me, that hes not super gifted in single areas, but I'm sold on him now. His gift is how many boxes he checks, his consistency, his mental and physical stamina, his IQ, ability to control distance, great jab and body punching. The fact that hes a big WW def works for him and makes him more formidable. I used to think TC would beat him clearly, now I think it's a close fight, but I still like Crawford.

He is definitely heavy handed, and fighters with a less than elite chin/stamina will get stopped by him imo. Someone like Porter is prob a 12 round fight.

The main thing for me is how other fighters and trainers talk about him that have seen him up close and personal in training/sparring. It's not the way they praise him, but everyone talks about him like he is a daunting task. Leonard Ellerbe is super defensive over anything Floyd related, always has been, if you watch his interview about the sparring sessions with Floyd-Spence, if you read between the lines, you can tell Spence put it on Floyd, and that is more or less in line with what everyone else says who was there.

Glad I'm not the only one, i've thought this for a while and when everyone else is hyping a fighter up like that it does make you doubt your own boxing mind. You're thinking what the ***** am I missing??

I've heard the stories about the sparring between Spence and Floyd also. The fact that it was even a discussion shows that something did happen and he did take it to Floyd. Looking at Spence though I do struggle to see how that happened. Makes me think one of two things. Either he brought his A game to floyd, whilst floyd was at the end of a workout or something. Or I really am missing something when it comes to Spence

Well I kind of explained the main points in my first post. Look at how much pressure he puts fighters under, hes constantly on you, but under control. He makes fighters waste energy and over-move, when they stop he will start punishing them. If they attack him, he backs out of range and puts a jab in their face (his jab is overlooked). As the opposing fighter this puts you under constant mental pressure and can create panic.

He has great footwork, good length, throws good straight punches, but better short punches. You should watch in particular, his fights from Algieri on, people get inundated with results and who stopped who how fast, a lot of times that doesn't really tell the story.

Most of it is hearsay, but I dont think Floyd would be at a disadvantage, he was preparing for Guerrero. The only thing you can say is he might have been surprised by the younger man, but even then you have to give Spence the credit. I can see how Spence would give Floyd fits in the ring tbh, he would have been a stylistic nightmare for Floyd. Watch the Ellerbe interview on YouTube, its revealing.

Spence is a welterweight and gains no more weight than other welterweights and less than some. He has never missed weight and make 147 easily. He is the best welterweight and you should see that if he KOs Porter who nobody else has dominated.

And yesterday you were demanding proof that Wilder said he wanted a body in the ring before you will admit he said it. Thats the comedy in all this.

Jury is still out for him and Crawford. What will they do when they get tagged? Crawford has not beaten a top WW, yet Thurman has. Spence will get his chance show us what he can do against the toughest man in the division. Thurman has a much better resume than either fighter. I think Spence gets his rep because of the Algieri destruction.
