I've noticed that the vast majority of deaths in boxing are below the heavyweight division. Hardly any deaths occur at HW.

    Why is this?

Not cutting weight would help IMO.

They don’t drain themselves. Dehydrating yourself also removed the fluid barriers between the brain and skull.

          This.

I don't think its been proven w/o question yet, but I tend to believe this type of thing is helping an injury reach into the fatal or severe injury category.

Back in the stone ages when fighters were complete bums with no defense.

Brain injury comes from a prolonged beating, not from big punches. That's why there's also more deaths in boxing than mma.

A fight like Wilder vs Stiverne I will do more damage than Wilder vs Stiverne II. Then less cranium fluid from cutting weight is a factor.

2 reasons I think, the first is weight cutting as people mentioned, the second is that there are more knockouts at heavyweight I believe and while the sounds bad it typically means less rounds in the ring and less sustained punches.

Im some ways I think the UFC with their smaller gloves is actually safer for the fighter. Its still a fairly new sport but I cant think of any deaths off the top of my head in MMA.
