    Setting traps.

When someone says a fighter is setting traps, what do they mean? What are some common traps a fighter sets?

Depends on the skill level of a fighter, a simple trap is just feinting a jab to draw a reaction from an opponent which adjusts their defensive position and can set them up for a counter.

A higher level trap would be something like the check hook, this usually involves a fighter opening up the right side of their body to invite the hook, then shifting their weight to their left side and pivoting left off the front foot whilst throwing a well timed left hook counter. Mayweather did this perfectly against Hatton. Probably one of the best punches I’ve ever seen thrown live.

Just varying your approach over the course of a fight...if you have been throwing the jab all night, and you feel your opponent is catching on and parrying/countering you effectively...you can feint the jab and come in with the right hand.

If you have been doubling up on the jab...you can jab once and then throw a hook...with a trap, you want to think your opponent has your pattern figured out, and then you deviate from it to hopefully catch him in a bad spot.

The most obvious example of a trap in action

Yeah Floyd was the first fighter I thought of when it comes to setting traps. Marquez was also effective at setting traps.

Floyd Mayweather describes what makes Manny Pacquiao so tough to fight

“He’s a good fighter. He’s a hell of a fighter. And he’ll beat a lot of fighters ’cause, the way he fights, he basically sets a trap. He sets traps for other fighters to where he can load up all of his arsenal and use different angles to win on fighters.”

“He throws the awkward left, a straight left hand, leans and throws it, and bobbing and weaving, bobbing and weaving, keep pressure, keep pressure. When he gets the guy, he goes crazy drilling him, drilling him. And the guy opens, Pacquiao throws the one shot and then he catches the guy. And that’s what he do.”

Very basically a trap is where one boxer deliberately tricks the other into doing something that can be taken advantage of.

Baiting a fighter into doing something.
One of my all time favorites was Ward throwing the straight right to Dawson's body. He kept doing it over and over, and when Chad tried to counter, Dre rolled under and came up with a perfect left hook that floored Chad. Dawson never saw it coming and couldn't do anything because he was now out of position. Brilliant stuff.
