When he got knocked down against Hurtado a couple of times and he was able to knock the guy out.

The ODLH was in serious danger at that point.

Santos Cardona threw like 1000 punches against him and his defense/countering was at full display

Man, what a sad day. This man was something special.

My favorite fights of his in no order:

McGrit II - The first fight was very competitive and in this fight he came back and just schooled McGrit despite the knockdowns.

JCC - This was the P4P match up of early/mid 90s and this should have been the signature win of Sweet Pea's career but he got absolutely robbed. The way he used his pivots and boxing skills were amazing this fight.

Hurtado - Sweet Pea was clearly slipping at this point of his career and was facing a slick boxer that just had his number this particular night. There was only one way for him to win and that was by knockout.....And that's exactly what he did. Pure greatness there.

Ramirez II - Just like the JCC fight, Sweet Pea was badly robbed in the first fight and took his first loss. How does he respond? By absolutely dominating Ramirez and shutting him out in the rematch.

Nelson - This was just a damn good fight all around. I thought the cards were a bit closer than reality as Sweet Pea was the clear winner for me. Two of the top P4P fighters going at it and they did not disappoint.

Could probably list a few other fights but those are the ones that stick out to me.

When he schooled Chavez and Ramirez and Greg Haugen. Those were my favorites. And his come-from-behind KO of Hurtado. And all his Olympic wins.

The ODLH fight was also a pretty interesting watch, mostly because they were obviously trying to pass the torch to the younger fighter. Whitaker was clearly on the decline by the time ODLH got to him and he still arguably beat him despite the decision loss.

Chavez. Although I thought he clearly won I had an uneasy feeling he was about to get robbed.

Ironically, I felt ok with the draw because that was just as much as a win considering who he was fighting and where the fight took place.

His fight with Jorge Paez deserves a mention.

I was just a kid during the Chavez fight - like another poster said, the silence of the crowd told the story.

My dad had a bunch of friends over watching the fight... I hid behind the couch with covering my ears when the score was read because I knew Chavez lost. I remember being confused that it was a draw; finally realized what a "robbery" was.

I remember the McGirt fight as well, and for sure Hurtado that was dramatic. Making Oscar miss like 12 punches in a row and walking off was one of my favorite moments as well
