read the fight analysis of those fights and you will see that none were really won by griffen. Good fighter nowhere remotly near great but good ansolid and now nothing more than an opponent. -
Like Raheem? maybe in being akward suprising and not marketable fighters. But body type griffen is shorter and much more squat than raheem who is long and lean. Plus raheem is the dirtier fighterOriginally posted by Asian SensationI think Griffin was a very talented fighter. He was a 1992 Olympian who reminded me a little of Zahir Raheem. Like Raheem, they both had a hard time marketing themselves because of their tricky, tactical styles.
In the first Toney fight, it was simply a case of Toney underestimating Griffin. However, the second fight was a str8 robbery. In the first Jones fight, he was brilliantly effective with his combos to the head and body. Jones was unsure of how to attack him because of Griffin's tricky counter punching style. Everytime Jones went to the ropes, Griffin would rip him with combos and then retreat. He was a very difficult opponent for Jones, and was winning the fight until the DQ. The second fight was simply a case of Jones being a much better fighter.
After that, he was stopped by Michaelzcewski and lost a decision to Harding in one of the most difficult fights I ever had to sit and watch. He deserved the decision against Hoye a couple years ago, but what can you do? Griffin is a very good opponent, but never had it to take it to the next level.Comment

Montel was a world class fighter, period. The guy had skills accompanied by a solid amatuer background and world titles as a pro.
He was coming down to Galaxy after he was in the olympics and was working with James in sparring. Let me tell you, that this kid who had no pro fights yet was giving the reigning middleweight champion all that he could handle. He gave James fits with their sparring sessions causing James to go off into his ranting and raving verbal BS sessions.
The guy could fight! And regardless of what the people believe of the descisions against Toney, he is the one with the check in the win column for both fights. There are fights that I thought that I won but it still goes down as a loss if thats how they scored it.
Montel Griffen is an un orthadoxed type fighter. Giving odd angles and movements. I saw the first Toney bout and thought that Montell won it. Didnt see the rematch. But I do know that for a couple weeks down at Galaxy he was owning James. Once again, the guy had skill!

Montell Griffin was giving Roy Jones hell, beating him! He was obviously a very, very good fighter.Comment

Gerald McClellan used to say that he "played with" James at the Kronk, made fun of him and boxed circles around him apparently, and Gerald was the new boy. That was after James had got the better of the likes of Adam Garland and Leeonzer Barber, Gerald (who James thought was just 'another punk' because he'd never seen him) stepped in and started winding James up to get him pissed and take him to school.Originally posted by Rockin1Montel was a world class fighter, period. When Dennis Andries sparred with the young, unknown Toney in early 88 he said that nobody had ever hit him harder.Comment

IF you ever seen Roy's Beyond The Glory documentary then you'll understand what i'm about to say. Jones has a very complex mind and the way he boxers, he carries most of his opponents if you want to go that far with it. Doesn't like to take a lot of risks. It's always safety first with him, it's very weird how it took him many rounds to drop Griffin the first time they fought but then in their rematch he destroys Griffin in one.Originally posted by FordabckupMontell Griffin was giving Roy Jones hell, beating him!
