  • Comments Thread For: Michael Conlan To Get Tougher Opponent Than Nikitin For 8/3

Michael Conlan will take on a new foe on the historic #MTKFightNight at File an Phobail in Falls Park on August 3. News of the withdrawal of Russian rival Vladimir Nikitin, who has torn a bicep, broke on Thursday night but far from taking an easy alternative, Belfast hero Conlan will take a bigger step up in front of #TheConlanRevolution fans.

MTK Global Professional Development Coordinator and brother of Michael, Jamie Conlan said: “These things happen in boxing and we'll now be looking to bring in an opponent that’ll be a harder fight than Nikitin would have been.

“In some ways, Nikitin was a step back in terms of level and we all know it’s a match-up based on sentimentality.
It was a crap fight and everyone knew it. Olympic story nothing, in reality its a 11-0 (6KO) 2 year pro boxer picking on a 3-0 (0KO) 1 year pro boxer, its ****. Honestly the fact that Conlan's handlers thought this was a good fight so early in both their careers tells you what they think of Michael. Bob Arum is infamous for his 'marinating' fights, well this one needed to be 'marinated', so why didn't they?

Conlan infamously stuck up his middle finger at the judges following his controversial loss to Nitikin in the bantamweight quarterfinals at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Honestly this is his only claim to fame.
