I've seen him derided as a "hype job" since he lost.
While he hasn't exactly faced a murderer's row, he's only had 23 fights... and that includes facing decent, top 10 comp including:
Povetski (albeit an old version)
Wlad (albeit an old version with ring rust)
Parker
The guy's been a pro for less than six years, only had 40 amateur fights, and was able to unify three of the belts, as well as building up a decent record against okay competition. It's not as if he was untested and got "found out" against Ruiz.. we saw all those flaws before, and he can't be all "hype" considering everything he did.
He's just a young kid, and still a dish. He made a mistake. **** happens. The fight wasn't as bad as I thought when I saw it again... he actually timed that uppercut nicely, and, while I couldn't believe he went "gung ho", as the lad said, he's used to people being KTFO when he hits them.
What was most alarming was how he's got into a "superstar" mindset. When the referee asked him to come forward, he had the look of a man who is used to having everything his own way, and that's not a good sign.
It really is a lesson in mindset, too... a man going to the ring wit h everything vs. a man going to the ring with everything to gain.
I think people overlook what a dish AJ is... that plays a factor.
