Sounds like he needs somebody to teach him how to properly feint with the jab. Errol Spence doesn't get enough credit for how well he feints with his when sitting it up.Ruiz was countering everything off of AJ's jab and constantly making sure to parry it, step back, or using head movement. There's a reason AJ wasn't throwing his jab out there willy nilly after a few rounds.
I think that's an example of a disconnect, when people say the fighter on the inside see's things the trainer can't from the outside. The Clinchko blueprint wasn't gonna work with the way AJ was winded and constantly getting caught in exchanges.Comment

yeah seems like he was never mentally built for all the hype eddie and these fanatics tried to make him out to be, and it seems like aj knew itComment

They can help with that to an extent. They'll help teach an athlete to breath and stay cool under pressure. In the case of boxing, if a fighter is nervous, they'll get tunnel vision, slow their reaction time, be more likely to flinch and close their eyes which all results in them not seeing punches coming.
On top of that, that nervousness will sap their energy and make their legs feel heavier. If AJ was able to relax like Mayweather in the ring, he could roll with punches and see them coming better.Comment

He needs to learn more little tricks and more dirty tactics in general. Klitscko used to use all sorts of tactics to keep the opponent at distance. Hugging, falling into them with his body weight after punching, stiff arm jabs, etc... AJ is a straight up and down honest boxer.
With his chin/recovery he needs to use every little trick in the book available to him. He's not good enough defensively to box so honest against the other legit top heavies.Comment

That's very true. You rarely see him use head control off of a jab. Ruiz would counter the hell out of his jab because he didn't bring it back in time. Wilder or Klitshko would just leave their arm out there to deflect punches or control the opponent's head.He needs to learn more little tricks and more dirty tactics in general. Maybe his arms are too heavy to consistently do this.Comment

Nothing wrong with the trainer here. The instructions were clear and simple but AJ failed to follow up on them "stop looking for the hook" meaning stop ****ing around and take this guy seriously. Do not put all your eggs in one basket by trying to go for the KO. "box him" meaning stay outside and dont exchange with him in the pocket, you are fighting his fight. He wants you to brawl with him. "Use your reach, jab then the 1, 2" meaning no shame in letting him walk you down, give up ground and stay on the outside. Keep him at bay with your jab and and catch him coming in with the left right.
The trainer was actually giving AJ good advice but AJ was not listening. AJ wins the rematch because he now knows that his cornermen were right. Andy is hardcore mexican style and you never go toe to toe against that. Too risky. You box it, frustrate it, never look for the KO, if it comes it comes. Best to just win the rounds by boxing.Comment
