Comments Thread For: Chris Algieri: I Feel Like I'm Right Back in The Mix

By Thomas Gerbasi - The Chris Algieri story keeps adding chapters. Literally. On June 4th, Long Islander releases his first book, The Fighter's Kitchen, allowing him to add author to a list of titles that includes world boxing champion, college grad, and nutritionist to the stars. What's next, Broadway? "Why not," he laug...

        Let's see:

        1) resume: check (Spence, Khan, Pac etc)
        2) ex world champion: check
        3) getting on a bit: check
        4) pillow fisted: check

Broner looks up from his hookah 'ahoy there challenger'.

Looks like a solid resume if they were converted to Wins - p4p worthy

Btw, be careful with that pillow fisted thing. Khan got wobbled a few times from that pillow-fisted fighter. Plus Broner still covers whether pillow-fisted or hard puncher

Khan wobbled by a pillow-fisted fighter lol ? Potential for 'Khan chin' jokes abounds. I guess its the low KO percentage Algieri has that triggers the 'Malignaggi factor' in his attractiveness to some potential opponents.

I picked Broner only because I can imagine Broner looking for a recognisable name that he can beat so that he can try to get back some credibility himself, although admittedly, I didn't think about it too much. Algieri would be the right weight for Broner at 140 given Broner performs better at 140, but Broner's problem is his punch output, and Algieri might actually do ok against Broner as he has a good engine and can go 12 easily. However, Broner has a decent chin, and while Maidana/Porter etc decked him, I can't imagine Algieri doing so, and Broner might be able to do what he wasn't able to do against Pac/Maidana/Porter, and thats march forward without worrying too much about what's coming back at him.

I only picked Broner too as Broner fights still bring in quite a bit of money, so Broner can outbid the likes of Hooker if he really wanted the fight, so he could make it attractive to Algieri too.

Algieri is one of those low risk fighters that might attract the likes of Danny Garcia too - I think most top fighters would look good against him (as Spence did), and I think Khan struggled only because of Khan's limitations in the ring (it was a close, competitive fight).

Hopefully the likes of Crawford/Arum would recognise he's an unacceptably low bar to stoop to, so that won't happen, but I can imagine Algieri being an attractive opponent for a lot of the other top guys.

Broner vs Algieri sounds like a good match-up tbh. But I wouldn't be sure I'd pick Broner even against a feather fisted Algieri. I know triangle theories shouldn't be a basis but it's always tempting to use it especially this case. Whenever Khan performs against an opponent, Broner performs worse against the same opponent lmao. I'm talking about Maidana and Malignaggi. I'm just wondering if Khan struggled badly against Algieri, how much less Broner? lol

Anyways, good match-up if it ever happens.

Current 140 is too much for a past prime Algieri!

He doesn’t get past none of them possibly not even the likes of Yigit or Martin!

Mighty Mo boxes him up in a boring fight and possibly stops him late, ffs he may even lose to Coyle this weekend!

Chris has slowed down and he’s prone to cuts and bruising easily now and it doesn’t help he don’t have much power to keep his opponents off him!

However, I do like the decision that he does now where he works faster in the fight and attacks the body so he can have a bit of a lead on the scorecards before the opponent starts to apply pressure!
