So, Haney is really pursuing a title shot against Lomachenko

Haney can compete with Loma now from a physical standpoint. But the real question is can he handle the mental part of the fight game. And I’m not just talking about the fight itself, I’m talking about the media and hype that comes along with a big fight.Comment

These young guns aren’t ready for loma, but they sure will be in a few years. No point rushing him to fight lomachenko, it doesn’t matter if a fighter takes an L, some fighters never recover from there loss so why not make it for as much money as possible which isn’t right now
In a few years Haney and Lopez will probably be welterweights. It must be getting harder and harder for them to make weight as it is. Hell Haney is so young he might even have another growth spurt LOLComment

Maybe considering he is young and only just became a contender, fans might be a little more forgiving.
I know actual fight fans won't mind but surely the casuals can see its not a bad thing to lose to Loma especially at his stage of his career.Comment

One Man's Understanding of Haney's Path
Ok, so around the same time Lomachenko is fighting Campbell, Haney should be fighting Abdullaev. If both Haney and Loma win, I suspect with Haney becoming the mandatory, he will be working toward a title challenge against Loma, for his next fight.
Meanwhile, Nakatani sits in front of Teofimo to challenge Commey for the IBF title. That means Teo is fighting an eliminator against Nakatani, seeking his title shot against Commey. Commey is "set" to defend his IBF title against Ray Beltran at the end of June, less than a month's time from the Teo/Nakatani fight. If Teo wins against Nakatani, he could be challenging Commey or Beltran for the IBF title by the end of 2019.
So...they are saying that Loma/Campbell may not take place until early September. If, and this is a big IF, Teofimo Lopez ends up securing the IBF world title by the end of 2019, and Lomachenko has won the vacant WBC belt, where does that leave Devin Haney, as the mandatory for Loma (provided he beats Nakatani) ?
Will the WBC make Loma fight Haney if Loma is going after the IBF unification (ESPECIALLY if it's Teofimo) ? What about the WBO and WBA ? Will they sit idly by while all this unfolds ?
Usually the WBC requires the winner of a vacant title to fight 2 mandatories. IF they abide by that, Haney feasibly gets his shot at Lomachenko. If for some reason they allow Loma to unify the whole division first, Haney would have to wait, and maybe schedule a "stay busy" fight before Loma.
There are a LOT of "If's" in this scenario, but I'm inclined to think it beneficial or prudent for Haney to get that additional fight before facing Lomachenko. Besides that, without a WBSS Tournament it's always complicated to crown an UNDISPUTED champion, with so many sanctioning bodies. It would take a guy like Lomachenko to see it through, which for me makes the LW Division one of the most interesting at this juncture.
Maybe Devin Haney gets his shot at world champion in the first half of 2020, maybe he doesn't. Either way, it's shaping up to be a compelling year for the Lightweight division. So many champions TALK about unifying a division, but with Money, Politics, and competing broadcast networks, it's a rarity to witness in boxing today. With the HW division seemingly indefinitely stalled at 3/4 of the way there, my money is on the Lightweights unifying long before Wilder and Joshua can "get off the pot".Last edited by CauliflowerEars; 05-29-2019, 08:34 PM.Comment
