Jack Johnson was a great fighter but he didn't fight in the modern style that the fighters you mentioned did. The closest guy to the styles you are referring to is Pep. There have been boxers, maulers, punchers, defensive specialists etc in every era. No one group has a monopoly on defensive boxing or any other style. It's a great marketing gimmick for the promotors though.
