Holy ****, that was a great fight! The first round Holyfield looked like he was gonna repeat the **** he did in the rematch. Then he started to wear down and Bowe started putting up a steady beating on him. After several vicious flurries uncontested, the doctors started looking in on Evander. In the fifth round, as Holyfield was looking to be in serious danger (healthwise and fightwise), George Foreman started screaming at Joe Cortez to stop the fight in the fifth. Holyfield showed that great heart and bombed Bowe to the canvas for the first time in his career. That **** was crazy, Bowe was staggering as he got up and in a fight of lesser significance wouldve been stopped. But Bowe survived and Holyfield weakened. Bowe dropped him 2 times in the eigth and won by TKO.
Damn, people don't give that fight credit. IMO, that fight is up there as one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time, without a championship at stake. In that time, you didn't need a trinket to be heavyweight champion. Tyson had just been released from jail, won a title but against guys who werent highly regarded. Bowe and Holyfield were two well respected fighters with the credentials to transcend alphabet organizations. I was always wonder when I see this fight. Was Holyfield really affected by a heart condition? Was Bowe really shot before this, but that wasn't evident because Holyfield was in a diminished state? What would that mean to Holyfield's career if Bowe didnt get up in round 6?
