But the ratings have been poor recently. This isn’t a whataboutism scenario....no network wants poor ratings when it could be filling that time with either something less expensive or something more advertisement/sponsor profitable

The ratings weren't going to be great going up against the highest rated program of the day for their last two events. They have a much bigger budget for ESPN+, that's why Kovalev and Loma are fighting on there instead of regular ESPN. Their performance on the streaming app is likely a bigger factor for whether or not ESPN wants to keep them around. As far as their network ratings, when it comes to combat sports, only the UFC is doing better numbers. Bellator, FS1, and Showtime aren't even close.
